Prize Winning Recipes TURKEY AND OYSTER PIE (Left Over Turkey) By Mrs S. W. Nelson, Algona 2 cups diced cooked turkey 1 cup left-over-turkey gravy 1 cup milk 1 cup small oysters 1 tbsp. chopped parsley 1 tbsp. chopped celery 1 recipe plain pastry 1 tbsp. butter I tbsp. flour I 1 tsp. pepper Combine turkey, gravy milk and oysters. Heat to boiling. Simmer 10 minutes, or until edges of the oysters curl. Melt butter, add flour and blend. Add to turkey mixture. Heat to boiling, add seasonings and parsley and celery. Fill 9 in. pastry lined pie pan with turkey filling, adjust top crust. Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees until golden brown about 40 minutes. Serve hot, top with jellied cranberry sauce. Serves 6. v TURKEY CURRY By Mrs Ken Geilenfeld, Algona 3 tbsp. flour 1 2 tsp. salt 1 to 1'z tsp. curry powder 1*2 cups turkey slock and top milk, or cream 6 tbsp. fat 1/3 cup onion, finely chopped 1 large apple, peeled, diced 1 large can mushrooms or 1 Ib. fresh mushrooms 3 cups turkey, diced Cook onion, apple, mushrooms and turkey in the fat until onion and apple begin to be transparent; 10 to 15 minutes. If fresh mushrooms are used, saute' several minutes before adding to other ingredients. Remove from heat, add salt, flour and curry powder and stir thoroughly. Add liquid, and cook until thickened throughout. Set over hot water, cover and cook 15 minutes longer to blend the flavors. Taste and add more seasoning if desired. Serve over hot boiled rice. Little or no salt is added in cooking rice. Nelson ALGONA Mrs Ken Geilenfeld ALGONA A surprising number of entries in 1 h e Thanksgiving Leftover category brought some wonderful new ideas to the judges and a tie for winning position in the Algona Merchants-Upper Des Moines Recipe Contest. The judges were really thrilled to s«e Jo-' many outrtanding recipes for leftovers. From the number of entries, it appears that the community has some mighty thrifty cooks that can brew a tasty meal for practically nothing. Final honors and the cash awards went to Mrs S. W. Nelson of Algona and Mrs Ken Geilenfeld also of Algona. Mrs Nelson supplied a simple - to - make, mighty-tasty recipe called "Turkey and Oyster Pie." Mrs Geilenfeld on the other hand uses mushrooms and apples with her turkey to make a delicious leftover dish called "Turkey Curry." Both recipes are printed at the left and would be well worth clipping for future reference . . . since Thanksgiving is just around the corner. There'll be no regrets that such a big turkey was bought for Thanksgiving. Next week's classification sounds like a good one for these cold blustery days when you feel like staying home with vour oven going . . . it's yeast breads.
