$45000000 authorized for drouth relief The measure carrying sixty million dollars total was returned to the house which earlier had ap proved the $45000000 and Repub lican 1 leaders prepared to resist the added sum for food loans which they have argued were beyond the province of the federal govern ment Sponsored By Caraway Senator Caraway Democrat Arkansas sponsored the food loan amendment and called attention of the senate to the demonstration last Saturday of hungry Arkansas farmers Before the Christmas recess con gress upheld the position of the administration and struck out the senate's authorization 'for food loans The senate also accepted an amendment by Senator Black Democrat Alabama providing that no geographical lines or county boundaries be followed In the administration of the A squad ron of 12 Savoia seaplanes brought here by General Italo Balbo Italian air minister from Orbetello Italy took off from here at 2 a (9 Monday) for Natal Brazil on one of the broadest transroceanlc projects in the history of aviation Twelve Italian cruisers have been stationed along the route between Bolama which is near the far western tip of Africa and Natal at the far northeastern tip of South Africa to render assistance in case of possible mishap to any of the 12 seaplanes composing the squadron 1600 Miles of Open Sea The route to Natal is across about 1600 miles of open sea with only one landfall between Bolama and the Brasilian city the island of Fernando do Noronha lying 125 miles northeast of Natal Flying at about 100 miles an hour the squadron might expect to reach Natal at about 6 (G T) or 3 (Natal time) or 1 (E T) Tuesday From Natal the planes each manned by two pilots a mechanic and a radio operator plan to fly down the coast to Rio de Janeiro which will represent a trip of about 5500 miles from Orbetello from where the planes took off December 17 The squadron may continue down the coast to Buenos Aires VARNEY PLANE SETS NEW SPEED RECORD occasion to show the world that this was body from which almost anything may be expected In the next 60 days That dean of the elder statesmen Senator Charles Baker of Custer county provided the thrills which made the opening session one' long to be remembered and for a time ho found himself the most cussed and courted man in Idaho for that much discussed and elusive thing control of the senate flitted from Right to Left and back again Just exactly as the veteran legislator chose to cast his vote4 All in Clear Fun i That it was all good clean fun and not to be taken as an indication of irregularity Baker himself showed when with a wicked grin he reversed all the machinery which he had started in the Democratic direction and restored the world to a status quo of Republican control The thing started nicely enough with the customary nominations for president pro tempore Senator Callahan of Shoshone county chair man of the Republican caucus started the ball rolling with the nomination of George Grebe of Ada county as president pro tem citing him as one who had served in past sessions with ability and fairness and one who had won the respect of his fellows Senator Robertson of Washington county seconded the nomination Senator Hunt of Bannock a Democratic newcomer nominated Senator Van Hoesen of Adams county floor leader for four sessions as the Democratic candidate and Senator Reed of Clearwater seconded the nomination Baker Passes Vote Then the roll call started Baker the first man on the list was the man about whom the Republicans were worried And he decided to prolong their worry and get some enjoyment for himself so he passed Grebe and Van Hoesen both passed for neither felt like giving the customary complimentary vote for his opponent until it
