EVENING STANDARD Edited by Sorrel Downer 38 20 FEBRUARY 1991 Metropolis METROPOLIS has been turning its finely tuned ear towards the gramophone player in the hope of identifying the voices of all our dear close showbiz friends Banned from radio John Lennon and Paul Hip hop duo the Dream Warriors hnil from the land of the Mounties hut glory in their West Indian roots With the release of their new single they talk to Metropolis And talk and talk Young gifted and black: Capitol and King Lou of the Dream Warriors IF YOU thought the sum total of musical output was Leonard Cohen Bryan Adams Neil Young and those old Rush meet King Lou: a lot going on in Canada that people know about and why making a lot of noise now not just there is reggae there is hip hop And then of course there is that strange fusion that makes up the Dream own unique a bit of ftink a touch of ska a healthy dose of jazz and an overlay of rap which all sounds like a recipe for musical mayhem but in reality adds up to the freshest sounds heard in many a moon King Lou and Capitol (aka The Quiet Storm) may have been playing together since childhood days on a Toronto project but the world first sat up and took notice with last yeajs release of Wash Your Face In My Sink followed by the Top 10 hit My Definition Of A Bombastic Jazz Style And now they are back with the most mellow offering yet their tribute to the West Indies the intriguingly titled LudL about a game We wanted a song that represented West Indians as a whole but that go on and on about being West Indian and explains Lou and then laughs pretty obvious West Indian pretty obvious black We just wanted to expand on that and glorify Lou is happy to explain pretty well anything in great detail and at great length It quickly becomes clear why called King Lou while Capitol gets the epithet Quiet Storm Once Lou gets started no one gets a word in! Pausing briefly to take breath he launches back to the subject of die burgeoning Toronto scene going to be a compilation of rap bands out he enthuses will be the beginning and then everything will pick up really So what is life like north of the Great Lakes? kind of laid says in his laid-back kind of way before Lou butts in: pretty conservative set like if you come from the projects usually into reggae and if white into But the Dream Warriors are intent on breaking down such barriers: lyrics are like continues ie Give Peace a Chance (originally written during the Vietnam war years) has been given a new lease of life with new lyrics by Sean Lennon and snappy production by Lenny Kravitz the man behind Justify My Love The song rattles along in Rand Aid fashion and features the warblingsofthe Peace Choir aka (deep breath) Bros Terence Trent Little Richard Bruce Hornsby Peter Gabriel Jazzie Cyndi Lauper Adam Ant A1 Jarreau Randy Newman Bonnie Raitt Ofra Haza Run DMC Michael McDonald Iggy Pop Dave Stewart Hammer 1 1 Cool Wendy and Lisa Yoko and Sean Don Was and various Zappas members of Guns Roses and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers among all recruited by the redoubtable Yoko The single has sold 400000 copies already in the States The question is: who sings what and when? Hours and hours offtrn Give Peace a Chance the video has just been released by Virgin America and is distributed by Wienerworld price £999 All profits go to the John Lennon Foundation ANYONE who remembers Anne Sunday Radio One show from yesteryear will be familiar with the concept of Chain Reaction Basically students from Loughborough would write in with record suggestions one week then (he next their peers from Preston Polytechnic would write in with others that were somehow linked to those of the week the more obscure the link the better Now KISS 100 FM has picked up on the idea altering it to consist of a two-hour show every Sunday night wherein all records played are linked successively through being on the same label or featuring the same singer or even produced by the nephew of the previous artist Equally baffling but jolly good fun It is eager for suggestions Just draw up a list of 20 records detailing the links and send them to Lindsay Wesker at KISS 100 FM PO Box 100 N78JG You can also fax him on 071 607 7100 Thefirst show is this Sunday llpm-lam be scratching our heads PM Their date promises to be quite a happening featuring fellow Torontonians Carla Marshall Sike and Krush and Skad while the Forgetting your Principles both our views The next album will be more more up-based more hip-hop maybe more Lou taking a back seat? believe it when we hear JA The Dream Warriors play the this Saturday tickets £850 The album And Now The Legacy Begins is out now The single Ludi was released on Monday Nice: DJ Eren Abdullah Lou work in loads of ways so somebody from the suburbs can relate to our music as well as someone from the projects Basically we found a way of taking the bad and spilling out a mouthfril of good Our songs will never die out because they relate to everyday life and not just to your sneakers your gold chain your beads just the legal release of the- current bootleg following talks with Eren Abdullah and label boss John Truelove seemed like nice people and talked to my manager first so everything went Principle had no idea the record was success-fliL number eight in the national chart? kidding?
