Triple threater Rex Mercer who started at Jackson high school several years back, will lend blocking, running and passing strength to the backfield. BY ROD ADMUNDSON wall-eyed pike factory at North Platte, under the direction of Superintendent H. C. Howard, has produced 841,700 pike for next anglers.

Altho this figure is lower than preliminary estimates, fishing enthusiasts can look forward to a substantially increased pike population next summer. Of the more than 800,000 pike realeased, 651,000 were fry, and 189,000 were fingerlings which range from 4 to 6 inches in length. HATCHING WALLEYE eggs is simple enough, real trouble begins when the newly-hatched fish are placed in rearing ponds at the North Platte hatchery. Walleyes are just plain cani- bals. From the time the young fish emerge from the eggs to the time they are tied to the stringer, walleyes are constantly in search of food.

They will catch and eat anything that moves in the water that is small enough for them to swallow. If a small object happens to be a brother or a sister it makes no difference to the walleye. ALTHO there is some loss of fish thru this cannibalism, the process is probably a very good thing for walleyes in in that only the hardiest and strongest survive. Perhaps this accounts for the battle a 5- pound walleye puts up when he grabs onto a spinner. Because of the terrific appetite, they grow like weeds.

Walleyes stocked this summer will be ready for the frying pan next summer. put your fishing tackle away yet.
