The display includes a 6-by-50-foot electronic caption mounted beneath the photograph that will be viewed by an estimated 1.5 million people each day. The photographs, the first of which is a scenic picture taken in Grand Teton National Park, will be viewed on the main facade of the new Marriott Marquis Hotel on 45th Street overlooking Broadway. The displays, measuring 30 SO feet, will be changed six times a year.

Each image selected will be in the tradition of the brilliant and exciting atmosphere of Times Square. It is expected that the new Col-mama will be seen by approximately 45 million New Yorkers and visitors each month. It has been determined that Grand Centrals Kodak Colorama, in existence since 1050, is viewed by more than 650,000 people each weekday. The Times Square, photographs will be reproduced on Kodak Dura-trans display material, a color paper emulsion on a white translucent film which permits the photograph to appear as a transparency both at night and during the day. The production of the photographs and the technical work involved in mounting this display are being done by a special team of Kodak employees, including some with extensive experience with Dura trans display material and some who have worked with the Grand Central Colorama.

Since the photographs will be mounted outdoors, they presented special challenges that tested our engineers' skill and said Scott Grover, coordinator of Markets Development of Kodak's Professional Photography Division. Among the challenges facing the Kodak team were protecting the transparency from wind and weath-. er and illuminating the photograph so it will have photographic impact both night and day. To protect the Duratrans material from the elements, the transparency is double laminated, once with a polyester material for added strength and again with a vinyl laminate which gives Ultra violet protection to the emulsion on the Duratrans material. 1 The huge transparency consists of 17 pieces of Duratrans material, J-by-17 feet in length, spliced together using Kodak splicing tape and Kodak Ektacolor print-film splicing cement When spliced together, the transparency is wound onto a 30-foot-long spool for transporting from the Kodak Processing Lab in Rochester, to the Marriott site in Times Square.

To house and protect the new photographs, Kodak designed a large frame box with built-in lights to provide extra illumination at night and on overcast days. In addition, the frame has to combat the creep, caused in plastics by the heat from the lights and sunlight, which can exceed 120 F. ur V- 1 hoT ft ft1 0 3 1 'V i irl Tit i.I'j To keep the Duratrans material taut, 10 blowers each displacing 2500 cubic feet of air per minute are mounted inside the frame box.
