Suddenly, in 1948, Brunot found that he had a bonanza on his hands and couldnt produce enough Scrabble games to keep up with the demand. In 1953, Brunot and Butts sold all rights to the game to Selchow Righter Co. of Bay Shore, the toy manufacturer that today still produces Scrabble in the United States.

Butts wife Nina died six yean ago. They had been married for 54 years, and had no children. His partner, Brunot, died two yean to fill time since. Butts has invented a new game. Alfreds Other Game" is arriving in department and toy stores this summer.

Like its predecessor, it is a word game, with. 144 two-toned letter tiles and four boards. Unlike most board games, it can be played by one person, or by groups of people. Butts is optimistic about the new games chances for sue- I felt sure I had a good game when I invented Scrabble," he said. But I never realized it would be as successful as it is today.

I think the new one is also going to be a good one. How much did Scrabble earn for Butts? He isnt saying. Im not doing badly," he said. But Ill tell you this. The government took about a third, I invested a third and I gave away or spent a third." Butts also has donated money to build a library and a health center in Dutchess.

Even though Butts has a new game on the market, he has not forgotten the old one. He will be on hand for the next four days in Boston, where the $50,000 North American Scrabble Open is being held. He will mingle with the 304 contestants, offer encouragement and submit to interviews with newspaper and television reporters. But will he play? Oh no, said Butts, like an uneasy spectator asked to play third base. Im not good enough.
