t 24 Gdlesbun ster Gdlesbu Thursday* June 28 of V yritin By KENNETH M. BECKER VANCOUVER (UPI) - Jotoi ^Wfeintltt Is convinced that with his $fentufy man, ;|)h6fte, ball-point pen yddagillg telegrams, has forgot- <teti how to write love letters. To Change that, Martin, chief librarian at the West Vancou* * t nt Public Library, has started a 'collection of love letters. "I w #Ji0 «ght we*d collect love letters "^to sfaOW that personal things e important," Martin said, important to local history and Itttjportant in helping people express themselves." Oftce he has put the collection together, Martin intends to «how iit tat the library. About a month ago Martin { Jound the diary of a woman I Who wrote about destroying her husband Anger. The diary "got me to thinking how interesting it would have been to read thos* tele-1 and i- to look in theif labtics for grandma's old love letters from grandpa* The response has been limited about 50 letters-Martin said, partly because "when someone dies, people save an old copy of the Readers Digest and throw out the personal things—as If people were interested in olc Readers Digests. Of he has received, from i « j • 4 * letters," Martin said. He went on radio and television stows, asking people the letters Martin quotes one a series of beautifully penned notes froim a man in Oxbow, Sask., to his ailing wife in Vancouver. The letter, dated June 7,1892. reads: "My darling wife: Please do not grieve at my absence. It is making me ill. My dearest wish is to find a home for you. I thank vou for you sweetheart. calling m© Life itself is less dear to me than you are. "The flight of time only deepens my attachment to you, my beloved. In the sight of God: who sees men as they are, Point? I live an honorable and pure life ... I give you many kisses, dearest." Traces Inability to Pens Martin believes the inability of present day Don Juans to match the love prose of their grandfathers is traced, in part, to the ball-point pen. "With a ball-point*" he said, "you can write so fast there's barely time to think and choose words. I experimented with using a 'dip* pen and found that I wrote completely differently, more carefully.'* He also blames the telephone for allowing \ and telegraph persons to instantaneously con vey their feelings. To illustrate what modern man considers a love letter, Martin produced a telegram dated 1885 and sent to him in response to his appeal for love letters. It read: "Your brother Malcolm was killed in the woods yesterday. What should we do with the body?" .A L P r. * v J" i z v I ? ' t. .
