surroundings were scarcely In keeping with the dignity and importance of the occasion The state escutcheon hanging dusty and lopsided over the hall entrance to the hQuse was the only visible scrap of color Bare walls and disarranged furniture unkempt chairs and desks and general disorder brought out many a comment of an unfavorable character The absence of national colors was especially noticeable and provoked harsh remarks on all sides Visitors were left to find seats as best they could and there was an animated Juggling of chairs and shifting of desks until the senators were seated Lack of time to make preparations was given as the reason for the unsettled condition of affairs By 11 the house gallery was filled and a demonsratlve crowd swarmed over the chamber floor ex greetings and hunting for jests Smartly dressed women sacrificed their handkerchiefs for the sake of clean chairs and men scoured the desks with their coat tails to provide seats for their women friends The members disposed themselves wherever they could find room At 11:20 the state officers and their escorts the outgoing officials who Tint! previously gathered In the supreme court chambers filed into the house Stocks that did not share In the strength were not generally reactionary but were rather restrained from the advance by selling to take profits The great speculative pools were active at few points
