Boy falls into pool, drowns (AM). PRESS-TELEGRAM (PM) Long May 12, 1977 A 7-year-old Lakewood boy climbed a fence in -pursuit of a ball Wednesday, fell into a backyard swimming pool and died in a hospital despite a teenager's rescue attempt. Sheriff's deputies said Norman Tatum of 6148 Eastbrook Ave. climbed the backyard fence of a vacant house at 6106 Eastbrook about 5:10 p.m. after his ball had landed in the yard.

The boy apparently fell into the pool and was seen floating unconscious minutes later by his sister. Her cries for help brought Stan Urbanski, 17, who dove into the pool, brought out young Tatum and gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until paramedics arrived. Despite the efforts, the boy died at Doctors Hospital at about 7 p.m. Truck crushes man against wall A Huntington Park man was fatally injured Wednesday when the pickup truck he was working on started rolling and crushed him against a building. L.A. bus trial recess is denied Associated Press Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Paul Egly refused Wednesday to recess the seven-week-old Los Angeles district integration trial and send the district's controversial integration plan back to, the Board of Education for revision. In seeking- the recess, attorney Harvey Saferstein said continuation was pointless in view of critical testimony by the board's own witnesses and Egly's own previously expressed oubts about whether the plan met State Supreme Court desegregation requirements. Saferstein, who represents a group called Better Education for Students Today (BEST), also alluded to Egly's earlier comments that the plan was full of "hot air" and contained "Mickey Mouse" language.

But Egly said it would be unfair to the Board of Education to recess the trial at this time without what the judge called a "thought-out" ruling on the adequacy of the integration plan. Instead of wasting time and money on continuing the trial, Saferstein argued that the plan should be returned to the board for either reworking or explanation why the board cannot come up with an expanded plan that might meet the court guidelines. Saferstein said BEST hoped to work with the school district to work out a more extensive integration plan that could be implemented quickly. Saferstein's motion came after UCLA socialpsychologist Harold Gerard said on cross-examination that race relations might be strained by mandatory busing of kindergarten students. Dr.

Gerhard also fied that lack of parental support for mandatory busing would adversely a affect learning progress of students in lower grades. The charges were raised by John Lynch, who is appealing a recent denial of promotion not connected with the 1971 test. A spokesman for the assessor's office said an internal investigation was made into the charges in 1975 after appraiser David Roche disclosed that he had found a list of questions and answers in a field book shortly before he, too, took the promotion test. The spokesman said sometime before the 1971 test a number of principal appraisers were each asked to submit eight questions considered suitable for the promotion test. Leon Obando, who had composed eight questions and answers, "inadvertently" handed them out to various appraisers who were eligible for the test, the spokesman said.

"Obando did not realize the questions were confidential and said he had given them out as samples to those eligible appraisers in his section, the spokesman added. As it turned out, only four of Obando's eight questions showed up on the list of 70 required for the test. Lynch told the commission he believed the "favoritism" shown in the 1971 issue appears to be "an ongoing thing in the assessor's office." Commission president Louise Frankel said the three-member panel had received a preliminary report on the 1971 incident from the county personnel staff, adding "it gave enough reason to want to know what's going on." She said she would like to find out whether any reprimands or other disciplinary actions were taken. "It seems some people may have been rewarded and I have no recollection of anyone ever bringing this matter to the commission," she said. The commissioners expressed some concern when told by Lynch that an employe involved in distributing the questions had resigned Tuesday. Mrs. Frankel said, "I think we want to make our own inquiry about this caper or whatever it is."
