aWBv noticing the tax levy fixed by the Jasper town trustees for next year, it will be seen they raised the levy seven cents on the $100, making the levy fur corpora-lion purposes $1 on each hundred, to which is to be added the school tax, fixed by the town school trus tees. We were informed by a prominent citizen of this place that not fewer than six different women came to bis place of business inquiring what they should do with their drunken husbands. It is an obvious fact that a greater number of drunken sots may be seen on the streets of Petersburg than in any other town of its size in the state. Many of the inebriates of this place detend on their wives to make a living for their families. The reason there is so much drunkenness here is because the officers do not do their duty.

This is a pretty serious charge, but the I'ress is fully justified in saying that staggering, drunk men are allowed to walk along our streets in the presence of our town marshal and not be arrested. Women and children are at the mercy of the baneful influence of these wretched sots. Do not the good people of Petersburg have something to move them? Petersburg Press. Yet Petersburg is an overwhelm ingly Republican town, and the Press is Republican authority upon its morals, and the enforcement of the laws. Is that the reason the town marshal fails to do his duty? But That Did Not Stop Motsinter From Making a Pretty Fair Speech.

Tbl Populist Convention at the Court ImMM "ii Saturday drew just thirteen of that stripe together, and attcr being called to order ly Chairman McMillan, of lluntingburg, Vir. Isaac Curry was chosen chairman of the convention, and Mr. Dan Lichlyter, Secretary. The convention then nominated the following ticket, each one by acclama tion, and all the nominees who were present pledged themselves, if elected, to turn one half of their salaries into the county treasury for the benefit Of th taxpayers generally. They could do this very safely, as the unlucky number thirteen indicates their chances for election For Clerk II.

H. Callis, Coluin hia not present. For Sheriff Dan J. I.ichlyter, I'atoka. For Auditor m.

Rauscher, Patoka. For Treasurer Phillip Conrad, Columbia. For Recorder Enoch K. A bell, Jefferson. For Surveyor August Ahrens, Patoka.

For Coroner N. C. Kelso, Pa-toka. For Commissioner, 1st district Bal. Payne, Madison, not present.

For Commissioner, district Jacob Bretz, Jackson. Tin1 business end being through the windy end was in older, and the chairman introduced banker X. H. Motsinger, of Shoals, who proceeded to expound the advantages of the initiative and referendum as to laws, as advocated by the populists, and the advantages of a iegal coinage basis of both gold and silver, unlimited in quanity, and un-tramraled by any foreign agreenienr. He made a pretty fair speech in all things until he got to the practical wav of obtaining free coinage, when he seemed to think that dividing the people in favor of it into differ- as'e it political parties, each voting for its own candidates would strengthen the cause in the national congn ss against the combined gold and greed advocates.

This part of his pooch was clearly illogical. He closed his speech by asking for -ubscribers to his paper, the "Referendum," and obtained several Democratic subscribers, as well as Populists. The populist convention with Pike oounty to nominate candidates for Represei.tative and Prosecutor was announced for Saturday, Sept. -24th, at Sulphur Springs, and the convention adjourned, to cast 18 votes at the pills in November. The county candidates, as far as the Col' ki knows them, are creditable gentlemen, whom it is a pity to make mere f.2ure heads of.
