ATANARJUAC THE FAST RUNNER (NC) Director: Zacharias Kunuk Starring: Natar Ungalaq, Sylvia Ivalu Taking its story from Inuit myth, Atanarjuat tells the tale of an ancient family feud fuelled by an evil shaman, and the coming-of-age of two brothers determined to put an end to it Running close to three hours, it's a long film but also one of those movies that almost physically transports you to another place, a world of snow and ice and the cramped domesticity of igloos.

But the film is never purely ethnological, because you never lose sight of the bet that these are real people. Vivid and different Director: Robert Altman Starring: Michael Gambon, Kristin Scott Thomas, Alan Bates, Kelly Macdonald, Maggie Smith, Jeremy Nor Cham, Helen Mirren, Emily Watson, Derek Jacobi, Ryan Phlllipe, Stephen Fry Sir William McCordle (Gambon, above rigto) is an unpleasant man, but the arrival of a host of relatives and family friends with their servants is the price he has to pay for one of his beloved shooting weekends. When he meets with a grisly end, there are a host of suspects -most of them unknown to each other -and the inspector (Fry) who calls to investigate the crime finds that everyone is concealing secrets of one kind or another Altman himself has called this a "who cares who and indeed the murder act itself is not the motor of the movie; as ever with this often magnificent director, the beauty lies in the to-and-fro of exquisite ensemble acting. Mirren as the exhausted, heart-frown housekeeper is extraordinarily moving; and Smith as a bitchy countess lends a refined and brilliant comedic air to the whole Indeed, many of the famous names are performing what are virtually extended cameos, but each one is a gem: Alan Bates, as the starchy Sovereign's Company (HW 8.40pm NFT2) Rare showing of an imnid I ft set in wekonv Oarke season.
