4 Monday, December 8, 1975 THE HERALD Dolphins hold oii 31-21 miracles! Bears and Chargers win Figure the odds. National Football League fans, on the Chicago Bears and San Diego Chargers both winning on the same aftemoon. It happened on Dec. 7,1975. The Bears knocked off the Detroit Lions in a wild game in Soldier Field, 25-21, and San Diego, winless this fall in 11 previous games, surprised Kansas City, 28-20.

There were other noteworthy achievements on this Sunday, but when the Bears and Chargers both win on the same day, that's the most shocking news. Roland Harper pulled out of the grasp of two tacklers and raced 27 yards for a touchdown with 4:22 left to give the Bears a come-from-behind 25-21 triumph over the Detroit Lions, breaking a three-game losing streak. The Bears turned Detroit turnovers into points to win. 27-yard run came after Horace King fumbled and Craig Clemons recovered for the Bears on the 42. The first touchdown came after Clemons hit Detroit quarterback Joe Reed while he attempted to pass in the end zone and his wounded duck pass was intercepted on the Lions The Walter Payton then scored the first of his two touchdowns from the four.

second score came on a five-yard run to give the Bears a 18-7 lead midway through the third period. brought the Lions from behind to a 29-19 lead with two quick touchdown passes to Marlin Briscoe. The first score covered 15 yards with 20 seconds left in the third period and the second came on a 59-yard pass play with only 49 seconds gone in the final period. The second touchdown was set up when Dick Jauron intercepted Bear quarterback Bob pass on the Detroit 37. It was fourth interception this year and the ninth of his career.

Six of the nine have come against the Bears. It also was his last hurrah as he left the game and it was announced he would undergo surgery on his knee Monday. Bob Thomas kicked field goals of 36 and 41 yards for the Bears but had one field goal try blocked, an extra point attempt blocked and he missed on his last extra point try. first touchdown went to Allie Taylor on a one-yard plunge the first time the Lions had the ball but first field goal and first TD put the Bears ahead for the first time since they beat Green Bay four weeks ago. Avellini made his second start as the quarterback, completing his first six passes for 94 yards.

He wound up with 204 yards passing, hitting ll-oM9 attempts with two interceptions. Reed, who took over as the Detroit quarterback when Greg Landry and Bill Munson required knee surgery, hit 14-of-33 passes for 220 yards but missed four in the final three minutes inside the 30 to kill off last scoring chance. Bulls, Black Hawks fail to join Bears in victory colunm It probably would have been too much to ask to have the Chicago Bulls, Black Hawks and Bears all win on the same They 'The Bears did their part in the afternoon, but the BuUs and Black Hawks lost in the evening. Host Phoenbc stoimed out to a 57-43 halftime advantage and then cruised to a 114-97 victory over the Bulls. John Laskowski had 19 second half points for Chicago who were never able to shake off a sluggish start.

Atlanta counted at 17:10 in the first period of its 2-0 victory over the Black Hawks in the Stadium. The Tom Lysiak did the honors against Tony Esposito, and then Curt Bisnnett scored on an empty net in the closing seconds. The own a 10-6-11 record and 31 points in the Smythe Division. Raiders, Broncos collide Operating on the A1 Davis theory that winning is everything, the Oakland Raiders take on the nice and loose Denver Broncos Monday night in the NFL nationally televised game as if their very lives depended on the outcome. The Raiders, pro most successful team over the last 14 years but not necessarily the happiest because of continued failure to make it to the Super Bowl, wrapped up the AFC West title last Sunday with an overtime victory over the Falcons.

They were 14 points favorites in that game and are picked by the same margin over the Broncos, who failed to challenge Oakland this year because of a series of Injuries to key players. While the Raiders are 9-2, the Broncos are 5-6 and merely playing out the string. Still, some of the toughest games in the last three years have been against the John Ralston-led Broncos, and Monday game figures to continue the trend. Graham take World Cup Johnny Miller and Lou Graham of the United States conquered the intense heat Sunday in a head-on clash with Hsieh Min-nan and Kuo Chie-hsiung of Taiwan and won the 23rd Cup team championship by an overwhelming 10-stroke margin in Bangkok. Miller also captured the individual trophy for the second time.

Sunday defeated Bjorn Borg 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 to win the $130.000 Masters Tennis Tournament in Stockholm the fourth time in sLx years. The mercurial Romanian, whose volcanic temper has won him more headlines than his tennis this year, swept Borg off his home court in just five minutes over one hour with a display of vintage tennis.

Borg, who at 19 is 19 years junior, had a nightmare final. Nastase took control from the start on the Royal Tennis slow' synthetic surface and only allowed Borg one chance to break his service. Nastase collected $40,000 on his third wedding anniversary which helped defray the cost of a $2.000 fur coat he bought for his wife, Dominique. had to win, you he said. NFL roundup San Diego triumphs KANSAS CITY, Mo.

San Diego backs Rickie Young and Sam Scarber ran for three touchdowns and quarterback Dan Fouts added another to lead the Chargers to their first victory this season, 28-20 ove the Kansas City Chiefs. Young ran five yards up the middle for a touchdown in the first quarter and scored on a three-yard run in the fourth. The Chiefs took the lead briefly in the third quarter after safety Mike Sensibaugh picked off a tipped pass and returned to the San Diego 15. Fouts put the game out of reach on the next possession when he ran out of the pocket and scored from the Kansas City nine- yard line.

Tarkenton hot again BLOOMINGTON, Minn. Fran Tarkenton threw for three touchdowns, giving him a career total of 289 just one short of John National Football League record to power the Minnesota Vikings to a 24-3 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Tarkenton, who already has cclip- the retired Baltimore Colt completion mark, hit 20-of-30 passes for 211 yards, including two scoring passes to John Gilliam and one to Chuck Foreman, who left the game in the third period with bruised ribs. Foreman, the NFC leader in rushing, receptions and touchdowns, carried 13 times for 64 yards and caught six passes from Tarkenton for 81 yards. Foreman has 961 yards rushing, just 11 short of the single-season record of 972 set by Dave Osborn in 1967.

The victory lifted Minnesota's record to 11-1. Green Bay dropped to 3-9. Sluggish Rams ivin NEW ORLEANS Linebacker Jim Peterson ran a fumble back 67 yards and defensive end Jack Youngblood scored a safety, leading the playoff- bound and offensively sluggish Los Angeles Rams to a 14-7 win over the hapless New Orleans Saints. Former Saint Tom Dempsey kicked field golds of 47 and 37 yards, the only points scored by the offensive unit. Saints quarterback Archie Manning threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Paul Seal in the final quarter for New only score.

Peterson grabbed control of a fumble in the third quarter after it changed hands several times in a single play. It started when the Saints punted from their own 37. Jim Bertelsen took the kick at his own 10 and ran back to the 23, where he fumbled after he was hit. The ball squirted under a big pile of players fighting for it and bounced 10 yards upfield, where Peterson got control and ran up an open field into the end zone. The point-after try was off to the left, making the score an unusual 8-0.

The Rams led at the half 2-0 on the safety scored when Manning dropped back from his own 13 in a passing attempt and Youngblood nailed him in his own end zone. Cardiac Cards roll ST. LOUIS The Cardiac Cards failed to live up to their name. St. Louis rolled past the Dallas Cowboys 31-17, steaming into sole possession of first place in the National Football Eastern Division and knocking the Cowboys into a second place tie with the Washington Redskins.

The victory gave them a one-game lead on Dallas and Washingtwi with two games to play. While St. Louis has games remaining with Detroit and Chicago, the Cowboys and Redskins meet next Sunday. could have helped ourselves a lot by beating the Cards said Cowboy quarterback Roger Staubach.
