to 10 p.m. Mike voice carries a big stick by JERRY THOMAS Deep and solid like the tunnels he builds, hardhat Mike voice is a tool, often a lifeline to his crew working deep underground. He's a said one man who has spent 15 years as part of foreman underground construction crew. At liome in Elk Grove Village, his neighbors know him as a village trustee knows a lot about sewers and and a man who has served more than 10 years as a volunteer fireman. He has been a member of the village board since the April, 1973, election and is chairman of the capital improvements committee.

TOSTO, 46, is frugal with his words. While the hard driving pipeliners bellow out crazy lyric ditties as they hammer away at their tunnel. Tosto is silent. In the narrow underground world, one voice is safety and law. Through the din of steel on steel clanging, his voice must be heard.

How does a man find his way to a trade that takes him digging tunnels below' rivers and under the traffic of cities? me it happened because I w'anted a part time job. a job I never left, have lived and grown up with for the past 28 Tosto said. TOSTO is foreman for McKay Contractors, Bensenville. As job supervisor he could sit out the day in an air conditioned site trailer. Instead he is first down the hole the day begins.

Heavy w'ork gloves and clothes could not keep the grease and dirt from marking his hands during the years. The years of living with the danger and responsibility that each man in his profession faces, have left their mark. get a feeling for the tunnel. It almost talks to you. There is no other way to explain Tosto said.

know I ignore the smallest nagging worry; during a job we respect each other, the tunnel and I. DO.N’T THINK my job is any more dangerous than if I had to cross Michigan Avenue and take an elevator up to my 10th floor air conditioned office. Only difference is that my elevator is a greasy bucket at the end of a cable. The shaft goes down and the air conditioning is Tosto is in the midst of a tunnel maintenance job for the Peoples Gas, Light and Coke Co. Built in 1933 when Tosto was a child, the concrete tunnel houses four 24-inch gas piplines that feed the south end of Chicago.

The tunnel runs a length of 537 feet, 80 feet below the Calumet River. The tunnel was not designed to keep the river water away from the pipes and has been flooded since its construction. THE M.4INTE\.^NCE job began with a diver lowering himself into a water-filled shaft on the east bank of the river. Gripping the ladder bolted to the wall, he descended to the bottom 85 feet down. On the strength of his report, the pumping begins and an estimated 700,000 gallons of water begins to pour out of the shafts into the river.

Tosto and his crew go in when the water is about hip high. He must decide if the overhead supporting structures have weakened or will hold. When braces have been installed the remaining water is pumped out, air and lights are brought in, and the workmen descend. PiU in the line must be located under the greasy coating and repaired by grinding, welding, recoating and, here needed, installing specially designed patches. While the work goes on, big pumps force air into the tunnel and remove the water seeping in continually through tiny cracks.

AND TOSTO WALKS the tunnel and listens to it. job was a close call. We had just finished a dam in a new section of tunnel and discovered it was six feet out of place. I had decided to have the men tear it dowm and start over. But something felt w'rong, so I said we go up.

The tunnel blew in as the last man was at the mouth of the shaft. what I mean, I guess, when 1 said you By the end of July the tunnel maintenance job w'ill be completed. The lights will be removed and at the order it seven-ton covers will be lowered on the mouth of the shafts. The tunnel will rest again while the river floods it. Tosto will go on to another job.
