SAVE 15 ON CHARMIN so squeezably soft irresistible And now thanks to these savings more irresistible than ever So take advantage of this offer But please try to resist squeezing the Charmin until you leave the Garbage Impact Unknown Hauppauge Engineers of the Multi-Town Solid Waste Authority conceded yesterday they knew little about the impact on groundwater that a proposed garbage-to-energy processing plant might have and knew even less about what contaminants would be found in some of the waste water We know what its effect on ground-water will be said Harold A Dombeck environmental engineering director for Melville consultants Holzmacher McLendon and Murrell Dombeck told county health officials the $125 million 3400-ton per day garbage-to-energy plant would require about 29 million gallons of water each day Because authority planners favor disposal of all waste water through the Southwest Sewer District and recharging no water into the ground they admit Multi-Town could lower the water table perhaps significantly Another unknown Dombeck said was what contaminants would be found in the 5000 gallons of water used each day to cool ash after the garbage is burned Dombeck said Multi-Town favors disposal of the 200000 gallons of waste water each day through the Southwest Sewer District because it appears 15 to 20 per cent cheaper than construction of a treatment plant A final water treatment strategy be devised until after the plant operator yet to be selected submits a final design for the plant expected next year Dombeck expressed confidence that most of the environmental problems can be solved Mark McIntyre 57 in North Sea Choose County Water Hookups Southampton Fifty-seven North Sea home-owners had opted for hookup to Suffolk County Water Authority lines as of yesterday the deadline that the town board had set for such declarations But the number is considered too small to justify the longer of two different water-main routes being considered by the town board as a result 34 of the 57 homes may be unable to connect The other 23 homes include eight that were found to have well water contaminated by leachate from the Southampton town landfill on Majors Path The town has agreed to pay the hookup costs for those homes A report in October by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services said that the leachate-contaminated water still met safe-drinking standards but suggested that the residents seek an alternate water supply Since then the town has been trucking water to affected residents Two weeks ago the town board voted to pay for the installation of a water-authority main to the area The board had plans for two alternate routes for the main: a two-mile route which could service 23 homes and a three-mile route which could service 136 The board on the water advice said the longer route would be feasible only if at least 105 homeowners expressed interest The longer cost would have been $147200 the shorter main is expected to cost $113000 Bay Shore Woman 20 Found Slain Near Home Bay Shore The body of a 20-year-old Bay Shore woman reported missing Saturday was found near her home yesterday with bruises discovered in front of 26 Center Ave by a neighbor shortly before 8 AM According to police Miss Wilkowitz had marks on her neck which showed she had been either strangled or garroted and rope marks around her wrists They said she was wearing a light blouse and jeans but no shoes or stockings when she was found Police said Miss Wilkowitz was last seen alive at the Bay Shore Long Island Rail Road
