Barzilauskas Career at End? Powell an All-Pro? Page 100 By George Usher In a sport in which just about every is big and strong' Carl Barzi-is is one of the biggest and strongest Just yesterday offensive tackle Marvin Powell of the Jets himself a big man at 6-5 271 slipped his foot into a tennis sneaker that once belonged to Barzilauskas "I wear a said Powell "and these are size 15 That Barzilauskas sure is Barzilauskas left his sneakers behind when he was traded by the Jets to Green Bay prior to the 1978 season and Powell adopted them He also left a reputation behind in the American Football Conference "He is one of the strongest players ever said Miami all-pro center Jim Langer Not too long ago the 6-6 265-pound Barzilauskas had an outstanding game at defensive tackle for the Packers in a Monday night victory over the New England Patriots It might have been his last game in pro football Today he is recuperating from nerve damage to his right shoulder at his home in Bloomington Ind and wondering if he will be strong enough ever to play again Until two weeks ago he could not lift his right arm and the numbness extended from his neck down to his fingers 'Tve been able to lift my arm for the last two weeks he said over the phone "But I have no strength It hurt or anything freaky Nobody knows doctors nobody if it will ever come back where I can play Barzilauskas who will be 29 in March suffered the injury Oct 4 in practice a few days after his big game against New England He has been on the injured reserve list ever since and recently was allowed to return home to recuperate "We were giving our offense a defensive picture of the Atlanta Falcons and I got Barzilauskas said "It was no big hit It was the same as on every play fault just a freak At first he lost the use of his bicep and deltoid muscles and could not lift anything with his arm "It will never be 100 per cent and a chance if I get hit again lose the use of the arm Barzilauskas said not worried though If over over nothing I can do about it like to play again but I know not going to try to go on and on if going to be injured forever It just worth Barzilauskas says he does not have to worry financially He has made solid investments in Bloomington and he recently started a building construction franchise in southern Indiana doing he said "Everything is He was a No 1 draft pick of the Jets in 1974 a player with great promise and he played in every game until he was traded in 1978 He had played out his option in 1977 but received no favorable offers from any of the other 27 NFL teams possibly because none wanted to give up high draft choices for him as guaranteed under NFL rules He had criticized the contract with management as being impractical because of the compensation rule and said he would probably return to the Jets After a meeting with coach Walt Michaels the Jets announced a trade to Green Bay for a fourth- and fifth-round draft pick from this draft It was not considered a good return but Barzilauskas did have a knee problem and was not considered an outstanding pass rusher He would have had minor surgery on his knee to remove cartilage after this season but has to wait now because he cannot support his weight on crutches His injured knee is the least of his worries now His future in football will be decided by the doctors "It will take six months to a year to know for Barzilauskas said "But the way I look at it is played longer than a lot of people If time to go time to UPI Photo The Franco Harris is stopped by the Art Stringer Bradshaw Steelers Fizzle on the Road NEWSDAY TUESDAY DECEMBER 11
