2 Die in Rooming-House Fire Manager after helping 15 to escape trapped trying to save last tenant inside Newsday Photo by George Argeroplos By Jim Mulvaney Sayville An early-morning fire ripped through a rooming house yesterday killing one tenant and the manager who died in a final unsuccessful rescue attempt after leading most of the 15 other residents to safety The manager William Schriber 60 died on a rear staircase fire officials said He was seeking a tenant whom officials have not identified and who was found dead on a second-story porch Five tenants and two fire fighters suffered smoke inhalation and other minor injuries as the fire destroyed the three-story Homestead Rooming House at 98 Candee Ave They were examined at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in Patchogue and released
