$100 Long Considers Down Governor Submits To Physical Exam NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 7 (UPI) -Gov. Earl K. Long submitted to a physical examination Friday, then said He would "consider" advice that he slow down and 1 take things easier. Long told newsmen his philosophy is to follow his doctors' advice "when I like to." He said he told the doctors he would slow down, but that he will not withdraw from his campaign for another term as governor.

"I won't quit running unless die," he said. Long, -who suffered a near breakdown in May, and who has been in three clinics for psychiatric treatment, suifers from a heart condition. He had a heart attack 10 years ago and has had several recent flareups. Status Improves His physicians said, however, that they found "his cardiac status is somewhat improved over the last examination. However, his conduct is such at the present that we 'advised activities in moderation." Long said he would not undertake such strenuous campaigning as seven speeches day such as he has scheduled for this weekend.

He has called a special session of the legislature to convene Monday and said he hopes it "won't be too dull." Long scoffed jovially at a 251 bill from the Air Force for "unauthorized" use of two Air Force transport planes assigned to the Louisiana National Guard. "All I can keep from paying, will," he said. "If that's all I had to worry about we'd' go through with flying colors." Others Use Planes He complained because the Air Force billed him for using two planes when congressmen, he said, go to Europe in military planes for nothing. "When they pay, I'll pay," he croaked. "What's good for the goose is good for the 'gander." It was assumed that the Air Force frowned upon the following instances, among others: -He went to the Kentucky Derby in Louisville in an Air National Guard plane, and it was believed that he used a 1 military plane to send David Rankin, the boy he wanted to adopt, back to Texas City, after the boy paid him a visit last month.

Brought Back Entertainers -In May, shortly before he broke down before the legislature, Long flew to Atlanta to talk to former Georgia Gov. Marvin Griffin. He didn't get off the plane, cursing reporters, and flew to Marietta, Ga. He spent 40 minutes on the telephone there and returned to Louisiana with entertainers for a mansion party. -On July 4, Long flew in an Air National Guard plane from Baton Rouge to Opelousas, to kick off his campaign for reelection.

-While vacationing in El Paso, some of Long's cronies returned to the state in an Air. National Guard plane after Long became enraged because they wouldn't tour Mexican nightspots with him. -When Long was drugged and flown to Galveston, mental hospital on May 30 he went in An Air National Guard plane. He also returned in Alarm Box Fails to Take Girls Picture NASHVILLE, Aug. Banner newsman Jack Setters, checking out a fire alarm which sent trucks screaming Friday to the same suburban block where he lives, called his wife.

"Any excitement out there?" Setters asked. "I'll say there is," replied the excited Mrs. Setters. "Your daughter just pulled the false alarm." But 6-year-old Deborah Jo was still wondering why the little red box didn't take her picture like her older playmate said it would 2 Bank Robbers Captured Within 10-minute Period DETROIT, Aug. 7 (UPI) -Two men robbed a bank of more than $8,000, Friday, fled by automobile, engaged in a running gun battle with police, crashed in their car, fled on foot, and were captured -all within 10 minutes.

He refused to give police any information. Police said the men entered the Bank of Dearborn, Just west of Detroit carrying pistols.

Some $8,026 was given them by cashier. Despite the speed of the robbery, police were notified before. the men left the bank. Sam Brandt, superintendent of warehouse nearby, saw the robbery and flagged down a passing patrol car. The officer fired several shots at the pair as they fled in 8 stolen car.

They returned his fire during the chase but the bandits' car went out of control and struck 8 light pole less than mile from the bank. The men separated as they fled on foot. The Inside Straight Detective's Death Brings Relief to Unknown Killer By MICHAEL MacDOUGALL Raymond Schindler, whom many regarded as one of the greatest private detectives of this era, is dead. His heart, overtaxed for many years, finally gave up the unequal struggle. Down in Nassau, capital of the Bahamas, a killer breathes a sigh relief. Now, he feels, no one will ever accuse him of murder. For Raymond Schindler was the only man who could prove his guilt.

This was one murder case which, officially, was never solyed but, off the record, Ray often declared he knew the killer. The victim was a titled British citizen and self-made multi-millionaire, Sir Harry Oakes. The apparent motive was supplied by h's beautiful daughter, Nancy. The foremost suspect was his estranged son-in-law, Alfred de Marigny. Lurking in the background was the murderer, unnamed but not.

unsuspected. Blowtorch Murder The crime was committed on a stormy June night in 1943. The lethal weapon, like everything else about the case, was unusual a blowtorch first wielded as a bludgeon someone of great strength, then used to almost cremate the a body. local authorities were unable to cope with the problem and the Duke of Windsor, then Governor of the Bahamas, phoned a friend, Captain Edward Melchen, of the Miami Police Department, and asked for help Melchen and a few aides immediately enplaned for the island. They found the murder room almost destroyed by fire and smoke.

The body of Sir Harry, contrary to custom, had been moved to another bedroom. Fingerprints were everywhere but Capt. Melchen had neglected to bring sufficient equipment. Thus, the investigation got off to a bad start, and was to limp along with false clues and impossible theories until Schindler entered the case. Body Found in Morning charred body had been discovered at 7 a.m, by Harold Christie, described as a governing official of Nassau and one of the island's wealthiest citizens.

Christie, who had spent the night as a guest, and had been the only other occupant of the huge mansion, had slept well, hadn't heard or seen anything. Captain Melchen theorized that whoever had committed the brutal murder burned Power Fails In Topeka TOPEKA, Aug. 7 (UPI) -Electrical power was shut off in downtown Topeka for 12 minutes Friday afternoon. Lights went out, telephones were dead, electric typewriters and adding machines stopped, and elevators didn't run. The power was off from 5th Street to 10th Street and from Quincy Street to Jackson Street.

That area includes the major part of the Topeka business It does not include the statehouse or the state office building. 7 (UPI) The Navy may close down the large Callery Chemical Co. plant here soon, after less than a year of operation, because the -energy fuel additive produced at the plant is no longer needed. Rep. Ed Edmondson in Washington said there has not yet been an official decision on closing the plant. But the officials reportedly said privately that chances look bleak for the facility.

The plant, which employs 400 persons, was dedicated last November. 14A The Wichita Eagle Saturday Morning. August 8, 1950 his hands or singed his hair because of the lavish use of fire. Christie showed no signs of burns or singes, so was immedtately eliminated as a suspect. But the zealous sleuth didn't have to look far for another.

Christie, among others, called his attention to the logical suspect, the one who stood to gain most from the Baronet's Sir Harry Oakes had often denounced his son-in-law, Count Alfred de Marigny, as a fortune hunter, and the two were on bad terms. It was common knowledge that Oakes had threatened to cut de Marigny out of his will. Blundering Police Instantly the Miami police set out, not to find clues that would lead to the real killer, but to find something that would link de Marigny to the crime. It obvious that many persons had no use for the youth and would like to see him hang. De Marigny had an impressive alibi.

He lived quite a distance from the Oakes mansion and would need several hours to travel back and forth. On the night of the killing he had thrown a party and a half dozen guests had stayed almost all night. His wife, Nancy, was visiting friends in the United States, otherwise she, too, would support his story. He had never been in Sir Harry Oakes' bedroom, that night, or on any other night. Or, so said de Marigny.

Then the police tossed 8 bombshell. Despite the testimony of so many reputable witnesses, they placed de Marigny at the fatal scene. How? Capt. James Barker, assisting Capt. Melchen, had found a fingerprint on a Chinese screen in Sir Harry Oakes' bedroom.

He had removed the print with Scotch tape so as to photograph it more clearly. Then he had compared it with one of de Marigny's prints. The whorls and curlicues were identical. Sleuth Called Into Case On the strength of this sole fingerprint, de Marigny was arrested and held for trial. That was when Schindler entered the case.

Nancy Oakes, who had returned to Nassau, believed her husband innocent, and sent for the private detective to find evidence that she was right. At the trial, Schindler proved that de Marigny hadn't had the opportunity to commit the murder, hadn't had access to a blowtorch, presumably the murder weapon. Then he tossed the fingerprint bombshell right back in the -prosecution's lap. That print, Schindler declared, hadn't been taken from the Chinese screen as Capt. Barkley claimed.

The photographs showed a background of circles, and there were no circles on the screen. The fingerprint had been faked to involve de Marigny by someone who knew he was not guilty. The evidence was so overwhelming that a biased jury had no choice but to acquit the defendant. Then Schindler went a step further. He offered to continue working on the case, without a fee, and to produce enough evidence to convict the real killer.

Public officials on the islands were not interested. So today, A murderer walks the streets of Nassau, glad that the only man who knew his secret has been silenced by death.
