Published "Weekly Every Saturday Morningr, by Saturday 1S87. Two able Democratic journals, the Towson Democrat and the JKent News, have strongly endorsee! the candidacy of Attorney-General Roberts who is a candidate for gubernatorial honors. THE HOUSE OK TIVES will be described by Z. L. White in the American Magazine Tor Juno, with portraits and sketches or prominent under tho head of "The Nation's Lawmakers.

THE BALTIMORE FEMALE COLLEGE was incorporated in 1849, with power to confer degrees, and was endowed by the Slate of Maryland in I860. The endowment establishes a free scholarship in the College for each county in the State, upon which one pupil is entitled to instruction, without charge, in all the branches taught in the College, with the us of text-books. Students can board with friends, or, at reduced rates, in tho College with the President and his family. The scholarships are filled by the Orphans' Court of the respective counties. Application for a scholarship maybe made to the Court directly or to Dr.

N. C. Brooks, President of the institution. The College has graduated 304 pupils, and trained and sent forth 200 teachers who are filling responsible positions. There will be a number of vacant, June 1st, for which early application should be made.

THE Port Tabacco Times comments as follows upon Gen. Johnson's demand for tho Tilden election law in Maryland: "By the Tilclen election law ho is willing to stand or fall. Upon this rock we will plant our banner and the "boys" shall not prevail against it. The counties aro asked to elect a Legislature pledged to the passage of the Tildeu election law as means of correcting election irregularities In Baltimore city. And Governor Hamilton and General Johiibon have undertaken to explain to the people tho necessity of such action on their part and enlighten them with regard to their duty in this respect.

"Now wo believe that, if these impetuous reformers will only cool their heads little and take a little time for reflection, they will see that the new ground upon which they have drawn up their imaginary forces is wholly untenable. The Tilden election law is no doubt wise and well devised measure in New York, under the constitution of that State; but it is wholly impracticable in Maryland under the present constitution of this State. Tho most prominent feature of tlio Tilden law, as wo understand it nnd the ono upon which the reformers chiefly rely for the correction of the city election frauds, IH tho requirement of an entirely new registration of voters annually. But in tho present constitution of Maryland wo have a provision for the uniform registration of voters, which has been construed as prohibiting tho Legislature from requiring a new registration of the voters of any portion of the State, without at the same time providing for tho new registration of tho voters of tho entire voting population throughout the State. "If these statesmen will take time to reflect, therefore, they will see that their proposition involves a modest request of tho people of the counties to impose upon themselves an annual now registration, which is absolutely impracticable and wholly out of the question, as the means of purifying the voting lists of Baltimore city.

There can be-no amendment of tho constitution before the sitting of the Legislature in 1888 and therefore the agitation of the adoption of the Tilden law.by that body is premature, and consequently futile and inconsiderate." Queen Kapioalni, of the Hawaiian Islttmis and her party arrived in Washington Tuesday evening of last week, and spent the remainder of the week in viewing the wonders of our National Capital. It is not an uncommon thing for distinguished representatives of foreign countries to visit Washington, but it is seldom that we have been honored by the visits of royalty itself. The Queen's complexion is not quite so dark as a full blood negro, but darker than the average mulatto. She is of medium height and weighs apparently about 200 pounds. The Princess, who accompanies her as a member of the party is much younger than the Queen and notwithstanding her dark complexion is quite handsome.

During the Queen's stay in Washington she was entertained by both government officials and representatives of foreign countries, and expressed herself much pleased with Washington, and with her entertainment here. When it was announced that the dark complexioned ruler of the South Pacific Islands was to be given the distinguished honor of special dinner at the White House, a protect was heard from some of the frequenters of the Executive Mansion. It was that at least one of the Cabinet officers would not attend the dinner, but this rumor was unfounded. Upon the occasion of the Queen's visit to the Washington barracks, she was received by General Gibson and the troops were reviewed by her. A royal salute was fired as the party passed through tiie gates.

After leaving the barracks the party attended the races, returning in time to attend the circus in the evening, where they occupied seats that had been specially reserved for them. On Friday the party was conveyed to Mount Vernon on board the U. B. Steamer Dispatch, they being accompanied by tiie Cabinet officers, diplomatic corps, judges of the Supremo Court and a few personal friends. FELIX.

We'd rather the store, but May 1887. you'd to if yon can't, liristor's Defence. XYAUK, N. May at 10 o'clock this morning' the opening address in the second trial of Ilev. George Bristor for assaulting Ida Downes on December 10 and 11, 1885, commenced at New City in a densely crowded court room.

At tho conclusion of District Attorney's brilliant opening Ida Downs was called as the first witness. She reiterated her former story. Her testimony was not shaken by cross examination. After hearing the testimony of Deputy Sheriff Fisher, who took Ida from Bristor's house, and of Mrs. Thomas Gemmell, to whom she first told her story, Mr.

Howe moved to dismiss the complaint on the ground that no corroborating evidence had been produced. Judge Cullen denied the motion. During Iho recess Mr. and Mrs. Bristor, surrounded by a score of congregational friends, ate a tempting lunch on the broad greeu lawn in frout of Court House.

At half-past one Judge Groo, Middletown, opened ably for the de. fence, his address, lasting forty-five minutes. Mrs. John C. Wood testified that Ida had related her story in her presence.

That afternoon at the parsonage Ida signed a retraction. After the signing Bristor said "Let us pray." At the conclusion of the prayer Ida said, "Dr. Bristor, forgive me for telling those lies about you." Next day Ida told Mrs. Wood that her first story was true. 1JUISTOH ACQUITTED.

Dr. Bristor was placed on the stand on Wednesday. He claimed that the first intimation he had of the girl's charges against him was when he was summoned by Trustee Ward to attend a meeting of tha trustee's. He was almost overpowed by the blow, and he at once went home and asked Ida, "Why have you told these terrible lies about me?" Ida looked frightened, and tried to run away. Angered beyond self-control, he write for what you want.

Correspondence of Tim JOURNAL. WASHINGTON, May 9, the amusement loviug public the past week has been an eventful one. The spring races of the National Jockey Club, which were held during the week, were of more than usual interest and were largely attended, notwithstanding the counter attraction afforded by the presence in town of Forepaugh's circus, and the National League base ball games. The social event of the week was the appearance of Patti in the opera 'La Traviata." The fiiet that she had been here before in this opera did not seem to have deterring effect upon the public, and it may be truthfully said that rarely if ever, has so distinguished an audience assembled within tho of an opera house, as that which gathered at Albaugh's on Tuesday evening. The President of the United States, his Cabinet officers, wen prominent in political affairs, women who are recognized as queens iu the social world, and titled representatives of foreign countries, combined Sn paying their tribute to the acknowledged queen of song.

Some of the speculators who invested largely in tickets to the Patti opera, and who expected to find a ready sale for them at exorbitant prices, were very badly taken by the general refusal upon the part of the public to lw swindled by ticket siwp. pers, as has BO frequently been the casein the past, when it'was discovered, soon box office was opened for the sale seats, that the best seats in the house been disposed -of to spequlators, there wps an indignation meeting held, aqjl was unanimously decided that tho prices by the speculators would not ibe paid, and -when the hour for the opening of the entertainment arrived many of the best seats in the orchestra were ucsold, and the speculators In order to gei back a portion of their outlay, were obliged instances to sell their tickets a tower price than was originally tdmrged At the box office. struck her. She went out and did not return till nine o'clock that night. He then led her up stairs and locked her in a room, where she remained till next day.

On her release occurred the retraction and prayer scene, of which all the witnesses give corroborative testimony. His description of the retraction and prayer scene was vivid und dramatic. He denied all the charges made by the girl. A verdict of not guilty was soon readied by the Jury. Bristor, his white haired father and his brother were in court.

Bristor and his friends shook hands.and'his face glowed with pleasurable excitement. The party adjourned to the telephone office and sent messages of joy to their friends. The Camel's Hair Stuft's in light shades ntfd light weights are desirable for Spring 'and Summer costumes. Always liked, always fashionable. Plain twilled surface or self colored plaids.
