'The Addams Family' Rebels By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD TOPI A surprise hit of the current television season is "The Addams Family" on ABC-TV. Co-star John Astin explains this is a result of public rebellion against conformity. The off-beat nuts in the series would rather switch than fight. Astin and Carolyn Jones play Gomez and Morticia, a weird married couple who live in a museum-like monstrosity. Their children, grandmother and uncle are equally dotty.

The family pet is a full-grown lion. A disembodied hand and a monstrous butler named Lurch are the family servants. Astin, a man of considerable charm and wit, is entranced by the show himself, And he reports that cartoonist Charles Addams (from whose magazine cartoons the series was originated) is pleased with the results, too. "NONE OF US enjoy being compared with 'The Astin said. He was having lunch on Hollywood Boulevard and quickly became the victim of curious diners.

It figured. He was dressed in the hokey doublebreasted pin-stripe suit worn by Gomez. CAROLYN JONES, JOHN ASTIN "Addams Family" Parents "You see," he continued, "The on the outside but perfectly normal people in every er respect. "The Addams Family, on the other hand, are not monsters at all but terribly daffy in almost every respect. Like the Addams cartoons, our show is an attack on the cliches of life, a reverse joke.

"We are a family of nonconformists who live the way most people don't but I think we have a positive approach to things." AMONG the wacky pasttimes indulged in by the Addamses are miniature train wrecks, feeding a voracious meat-eating plant, and fencing matches between Morticia and Gomez. For laughs, Uncle Fester illuminates a light bulb by placing it in his mouth, and son Pugsley keeps his money in a live piggy bank. Astin, however, believes the popularity of the show lies in the tender love story of the principals. "In many respects we're the only normal family on Room Additions No Job Too Big-None Too Small! "No other situation comedy show has as much-romance in it between a husband and wife. And Gomez isn't the typical television husband, the patsy who always does everything wrong. "No, sir.

Gomez does exactly as he pleases. Nothing frightens him except a cliche or something that might interfere with his love life. Personally, I think. the popularity of the series can be traced to viewers who would like to break with convention. "We break a lot of the silly rules and regulations that most people live by, and our viewers might start doing the same sort of thing."
