Page A-8-INDEPENDENT Long Beach, Sept. 27, 1941 Lutheran Churches Campaign Five Days in Concert Church of Nazarene Gets New Minister Ponder W. Gilliland, 44, pastor of the Torrance First Church of the Nazarene for the last two years, is the new minister of Long Beach First Church of the Nazarene, 5253 Los Coyotes Diagonal. He will assume his duties Sunday. Rev.

Gilliland was born in Texas and graduated from Pasadena College in 1942. He began his ministry in, Northern California as a pastor, has REV. P. W. GILLILAND Comes to Long Beach also pastored in Calgary, Alberta and Little Rock, and served as district superintendent of the San Antoniol district in Texas for three years.

At the general convention and assembly in 1952 he was elected general president of the Nazarene Young People's Society, International, and was also elected as a member of the general board of the denomination, In 1956 the general assembly elected him executive secretary of the NYPS International, making him the only person ever to be elected as both general president and executive secretary. During the four years he served at international headquarters in Kansas City, he was director of the Nazarene Servicemen's Commission and traveled to Germany and Japan. Rev. Gilliland and his wife, Floy, have four children: Glaphre, 19, a sophomore at Pasadena College; Marsha, 17, a senior at Millikan High school; Ronald, 15, a sophomore at Millikan; and Sherry, 7, enrolled at Carver Elementary school. A sermon 'The Power of God--Or Else!" will be delivered by the convention President Dr. Leslie R. Smith, of Lexington, BEGINNING MONDAY morning all general sessions of the assembly will be held at the Shrine Auditorium. Dr. Smith will preside at these sessions, in which at least 66 reports and resolutions, including some on controversial social issues, will be submit; ted for action.

The Christian Church is the largest Communion to have EGDAHL Lutheran originated in America, with more than 8,000 congregations in the United States and Canada.
