Jolly Bob Murphy stepped down as the emcee of this important Ch. 9 series, which has given away hundreds of dollars a month since its premiere in October. Tony Hernandez, the Ch. 2 sports reporter before Jim Bouton, takes over as emcee tonight at 6:30 (new time). Smiling Bob Murphy was a terribly popular figure with "Bowling for Dollars" fans.

However, it's a long-standing tradition for Murphy to do the Mets games on Ch. 9 in April. The former voice of the Muskogee, Reds (Class Western League) and the man who replaced the one and only Curt Gowdy in Oklahoma City bowed to tradition. Despite the high ratings of "Bowling for Dollars," he elected to return to the Mets telecasts for a 13th season. That's the way the wood falls, I suppose.

"Bowling for Dollars," in case you haven't kept up with the latest cultural phenomena on TV, is an example of counter-programing. The news or witches twitching their noses drove many people to watch "Bowling for they were hooked. Every weekday night, they saw a dazzling panorama of fat ladies, pubescent teenagers and assorted web-footed men racking up fantastic scores and subsequent prizes of $6, $9, and $4. But first, you saw brilliant interviews. Babbling Bob Murphy asked one woman contestant, selected to bowl because she had filled out a postcard with her name and address, "Debra? What do people call you- Debbie?" Murphy is always "right in the pocket" with his questions.

My favorite show was the one in which Murphy insisted on interviewing a woman with a severe stuttering problem for at least five minutes without stopping his smiling, even though it was evident that the poor lady was embarrassed to death. "She eventually won $5," recalled my pen-pal Ed Ramras of Queens Village. The next fun part of the show is where the lucky bowlers get to answer the question from the host: Who is rooting for him? One contestant, after introducing his wife in the audience, went on to say hello to the folks watching at home, including his girlfriend. Some day, the host of "Bowling for Dollars" is going to ask, "Who's watching?" and a poor contestant, some loser, like Woody Allen, is going to say "nobody." Can you imagine what would happen? The people in the home TV audience would probably send money in to the wretch. Ch.

9 currently allows contestants to name as many people as they like. For good reason. Between naming relatives in the entourage, all of whom line up at the back of the studio, and the relatives at home, it is felt that Ch. 9 might capture a significant part of the actual TV audience. The station reportedly is considering dropping.

the alleys, bowling balls and pins and other props. and just have people standing up naming their relatives. This would be a good thing. The actual bowling is the least interesting aspect of the show. The personalities of the guests, whose post cards have been selected at random, are the center of attraction.

I was particularly delighted with one guy the other night. He came UD like a man-about-town-and -bowling lanes. I mean hip, really cool. He rattled off some 50 names in answer to who was rooting for him and then proceeded to knock down seven pins. walking off with a total prize of $7.

The conquering hero smile of departure was worth the price of admission. I do believe television is wonderful when you can see something like that. But I also have to admit that my interest in this show goes beyond mere criticism. A friend of mine named Sam Glick watches "Bowling for Dollars" religiously. The other week he filled in a post card in my name, and put it in the mailbox, thus making me a prospect for an appearance one night.

Sam suggested that I begin making up a list of friends, in-laws, immediate family and other next of kin or line of succession, the boys and girls at the office and members of my bowling team or Communist cell. "If you are selected hv fate to appear on the program," Sam advised, "and the emcee asks you, 'Who's you will be ready. I also trust you will pick my own card from the bin when its time to select your pin pal. When you dip into the batch feel around for a card that's 12-inches by 18-inches, fluorescent and dipped in honey." Artistically, this show is important because it's an example of what TV was like in the old old days. "Early Early Television," as the period was technically called, was better.

But "Bowling for Dollars" with Bob Murphy was so bad, it had camp value and was a lot of fun. We're all rooting for Hernandez to make it as the new emcee. Just keep smiling, Tony. Rod Serling, host. of the National ter.
