Gafesburg ftefllste>«Maf 1, Galesburg, 111 Tuesday June 2& llff} ,f Florida Resort Town: Local Problems First Hollywood, Fin. (population 106,873) lies midway between Fori Lauflcfdalo and Mlnml on Florida's Gold Const. It is both n resort and residential city with rdeepwfttef harbor and facilities for golf, fishing and swimming. Reg Crowder Is a reporter for the Hollywood S«n-Tattlcr. Just a few lights fcumed in ibis hl#iiflse condominiums to lihh south, silent testimony that the winter season was over. it is a curious, ptefcc, to ithln strip ofocean front atong the eastern edge of what is either Greater Hollywood or Boutfi Broward County, depending upon whose chamber of commerce is talking. It is a place where owners of $80,000 condominium unite don't know what city they're in. A few think it's Miami Beach. THE LARGEST contingent is from New" York state and it brings its business worries. By ARNOLD B. SAWISLAK WASHINGTON (UP I) Once in a while, everything in this town becomes clear. Absurdly clear. • In the space of one week, we were assailed with the following items of intelligence from the nation's capital; Washington Window —The Watergate hearings Were postponed so that its seamy disclosures would not compete with the Nixon- Brezhnev summit meeting. So we did not hear John Dean testify, but we were informed that he borrowed $4,800 of Republican campaign funds to take a honeymoon. * —The Navy disclosed that one of its F14 jet aircraft shot itself dowrt. We were told that the $20 million plane "successfully launched" 'its Sparrow missile and then ran into it. — The House approved amendments which would bar antipoverty program lawyers from representing "indigent, abandoned Watergate defendants" and citizens younger than 18 unless their parents had been physically abusing them. —The General. Services Administration, which has charge of government buildings, disclosed it had spent $1.3 million on President Nixon's Florida and California homes. Included was $2,800 for a swimming pool heater. —During a heavy rainfall, a Washington pedestrian stepped off a curb into ..what he apparently thought was a puddle. It was a 10-foot excavation. A policeman trying to rescue him also went in over his head. (Passers-by fished (both men out. It has been said that the prime requirement of the political life is neither to know everything nor solve anything. But it 4s essential to have explanations to stay afloat in Washington. OUR MEDICAL OP/HCS — SENIOR CITIZEN, OPTICAL PLAN y Why did the Information about Dean come out at a time when the lid was supposed to be on the Watergate affair? One explanation is that members of the Senate, Who are responsible for most of the leaks about the investigation, are getting tired of hearing themselves described as members of a "gentleman's club." < What explains the suicidal airplane? One knows better than to ask the Pentagon. One possibility is that the Navy is preparing an appeal to Congress for funds to buy faster missiles. Another is that the administration is testing a new self-policing arms limitation plan. The House legal services amendments are easy. Most congressmen are, or recently have been, the fathers of teenage children and shudder at the thought of giving kids free lawyers on top of everything else. As for the caveat against Watergate defendants, it's possible that House members, many of whom are lawyers, witnessed the attorney-client relationship of Gerald Alch and Watergate bugger James McCord and decided they would not want to wish that kind of trouble on anyone. The GSA's purchase of a swimming pool heater fOr the First Family also is easy to explain. The presidency has taken enough buffeting in recent times without the Ration indeed the world, being subjected to the spectacle of «a President with goose bumps The case of the inadvertent political gossip and hometown newspapers aiioftg with its $port shirts and fishing gear. Studies show the typical metamorphosis is from tourist, to winter visitor to retiree. The change in state of mind (/ interests and concerns is even more gradual than the physl- oail relocation. The refugees from the north ington swimmer needs no explanation. R was the kind of thing that could happen anywhere. In fact, .. when Peshttgo, Wis., begins ito build <a subway, .pedestrians there will be well advised to avoid puddles. •And that concludes this explanation of what happened last week in Washington. Is that clear? ihecdmS incorporated' in the local scene by local problems. When Hb6 roof on the mul- timilltott dollar condominium! springs a leak, the parking lot floods and the promised maflfta' never gets built, it \s quickly discovered that local osfieials ate the folks to see. THE COMMON problems of water pollution, trash pickup, traffic attd crime are shared with the more numerous lo* cals. And the invisible barrier slowly dissolves. The cost of food seems to have hit those away from the beach more, although not exclusively. The beef boycott drew enough housewife support to form rival factions among boycotters. When a congressional committee held hearings in Miami on the state's environmental problems, area activists went down to roast federal agencies for being lax in their enforcement of environmental laws. The Watergate hearings are received in much the same way as the TV soap operas they briefly replaced "Did ya' hear what Nixon did?" an elderly man chuckles to a buddy at the donut shop. LOCAL PROBLEMS get first plaice because they can't bo Ignored. National problems often can't bo separated, though, as with inflation. At a time when big govewffltten* seems more isolated tfeaft ever citizens appear to bf di»* covering thai) they can change the direction of the planning and zoning board.
