Fantastic Passing Record By Tam Star-546 Yards! By GARY TISCHLER Five hundred and forty-six yards across a grassy flat piece of plain is not very iar. You can shout to somebody on the other end, you can walk it, trot it or der four minutes, as throwing a perfect game if your name Sandy, as reading the story first in Playboy. It just isn't done very often. tv Athletic Leagues. Final score: 38-25.

Woodward, who was the Indian's second-best quarterback until injury took out sophomore phenom Don Mack in. threw on the very first play of the game and he was still throwing when the final second finally ticked off, three hours later. In between. Woodward, small and almost hidden behind his line, accomplished the following bits of passing derring-do: Completed 32 of 43 passes for 74 4 per cent worth of accuracy; finished with 546 yards, more than the entire Novato output added in with the Tam rushing and the yardage piled up by the band at halftime; threw three touchdown passes, two of them to two-a-game receiver Mike Biber: did not miss one offen: sive play, and lost 17 yards running backwards on the three occasions that the Hornets managed to catch up with him. It was the kind of performance that makes John Brodie or even i a as look horribly overpaid.

The 546 yards are certainly a Marin County Athletic League record They may be a state record. They are one-fourth of a season record in Southern California. And Woodward, who has played in two complete games and perhaps half of two others, still has five games to play. personal touch made Novato quarterback I Harold Fain look like he was having a bad day, which he On a normal day with normal opposition. 11 of 25 for 237 yards and two touchdowns would have earned him a hero's toga.

At the close of the game, he had a perfect toss in the end zone but it bounced off his shoulder pads. The victory was Tam's fourth straight and second straight loop victory, giving the Indians a 2-0 MCAL mark and a 4-1 record overall. Novato saw its hopes for a second straight title practically disappear as the Hornets lost their second league game in two outings. This was not a day for defense. Like an old theory rendered useless, it disappeared right after the kickoff.

For the record, Tam piled up a total of 639 yards on offense and Novato chipped in with 425 yards for a grand total of 1.064 yards, which some teams spend most of a season trying to get The total passing yardage of the game was 833. And the 1 A with airline strikes. And for all that it was close for four touchdowns. The two teams covered the whole field with cleat marks in a hurry but the Indians went on the warpath first with a screen pass to Mike Fowler for 20 yards and a 13-yarder to Steve Keiter Continued on page 30 drive it and nobody will pin a medal on you. But when you travel that far by throwing a football to jittery receivers, sometimes backtracking, sometimes being chased by big boys intent on slaughter, then it becomes as impressive as running a mile backwards But Steve Woodward did it Saturday at Novato.

You may ask the Novato defenders who may not want to talk about it, after the Tamalpais quarterback wore out his arm and the Hornets in a scoring marathon that kept the Indians right behind Terra Linda in Marin 49ers Rout Atlanta, Shoot For Second Place ALONG MARIN'S SPORTS TRAIL By JIM GILMARTIN l-J Sports Editor Brodie Still Numero Uno; Mira Relegated To Finger-Man Role WELL, IT looks like you fans of Georgie Porgie Mira will have to sit back and wait some more. There are legions of Mira supporters after the former University of Miami flash directed the 49ers to their 21-20 upset of Green Bay last week, but yesterday John Brodie stepped back into his quarterback job and showed he has no intention of being the wealthiest bench warmer in NFL history. By connecting on 16 of 24 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns, Mr. Brodie left no doubt that he is Numero Uno. I THINK the whole key to San Francisco's sudden rise to power alter early season patty-cake performances is the arrival of the offensive line.

On that last drive against the Packers last week the forward wall seemed to come of age. manhandling the Packer defense, and yesterday it continued to do tremendous work, opening holes for the rushes of Ken Willard and John David Crow and. most important, giving Brodie the protection he so richly deserves. On some pass plays yesterday Brodie had enough time to count his money before a reversal from the early season harrassment he experienced, giving him the title of a half-harrassed passer. Yesterday John-John wasn't touched once by a defender.

I HOPE easy victory doesn't lull you fans into a sense of false security. Atlanta is the weak- sister in the NFL, and next Sunday's game against the Lions should be much tougher. But the way the 49ers have jelled leads me to believe they will win most ol their remaining games. A nice thing about yesterday's game was that we staunch 49ers backers were long overdue for a laugher after a series of fingernail-biters and cliffhangers. ANOTHER HAPPY note was that Coach Jack Christiansen was able to use some scrubs I even know existed.

TV announcer Bob Fouts was screaming names I never heard before, like Kramer and McFarland and Hindman and Jackson. It was as if Chris cleaned out his closet. When those guys play, you KNOW it's a laugher bordering on hysterics. I WAS delighted to see Chris found work for Billy Kilmer who did the punting. Kilmer, the ex-UCLA flash, is third string quarterback with as much opportunity to see action as Baby Snooks.

1 believe his early 49er career was spent as ball-holder for conversion kicks, but along came Mira to beat him out of that job. The well manicured Mira has one of the quickest fingers in the league. Chris was in such a good mood late in the game that, with a tremendous lead, he throw caution to the wind and let Kilmer play quarterback lor a while. IF YOU think I'm going to end this right here without reminding you that I was the only l-J prognosticator to predict the upset of Kansas City yesterday you didn take your smar pills this morning. But it behooves me to iniorm you that Gary Tischler was the only staffer to foresee Cal's tremendous upset over Washington.

And also 1 must admit I was the only one to pick Beloit over St. Olaf in the Game of the Century back in the midwest. St. Olat squeeked out a win. Thirty- six to nothing! Well, you can't win 'em ail! Hill took a first place yesterday at Monterey in the first 100- mile heat over the nearly 1.9- mile Laguna Seca Raceway and then coasted home a strategic second in the concluding heat. His teammate, Jim Hall, finished directly behind Hill in each heat, seemingly more content that one of the automatic- dri ve Chaparal Chevrolets would win than he himself. And the quarterback leader, John Brodie. now appears rounding into shape after a slow start that was perhaps attributable to his holdout that lasted into the pre-season training period. Brodie passed for three touchdowns and hit 16 of 24 attempts for 248 yards with no interceptions against the Falcons, whose only victory in their short history came during the pre- i season at San Francisco's expense. Brodie hit Dave Parks with a 10-vard touchdown pass and Gary Lewis for an 18-yard score for his first two touchdowns and then waited until the third period for his third six-point strike. John David Crow ran for 50 yards on 10 carries, Ken Willard went 53 yards in 12 carries and Dave Kopay picked up 34 yards on seven tries. Willard scored one touchdown on a one- yard run.

The last 49er six-pointer came on an eight yard pass from George Mira to UCLA rookie Dick Wichter in the fourth quarter. Tommy Davis added a 37- yard field goal to five conversion kicks, but had one point after touchdown attempt blocked. Davis was unable to handle his kickoff and punting chores because of a sore leg. Raiders In Big Upset Over Chiefs KANSAS CITY (UPI) The Oakland Raiders, a solid contender after a shaky start, take their explosive passing attack to New York this Sunday for a showdown with the Jets and Joe Namath. And fi quarterback Tom Flores can keep his new-found momentum going, he might have something for the story books. Flores, one of the original Raiders who has seen the club at its darkest and brightest hours, fired three touchdown passes yesterday during a 28- point second quarter burst that carried Oakland to a 34-13 upset of Kansas City. All told, he solved KC's pass defenses for 14 out of 24 passes and 301 yards.

The Raiders. 14-point underdogs, now are 3-3 for the season. Kansas City saw its mark drop to 5-2 and this shoved the Chiefs back into second place in the western division behind San Diego. Flores made good on scoring tosses of 75. 76 and 10 yards during the second period fire- i works.
