(Independent-Journal photo) TOGETHfRNfSS Neighborhood Plans Own Yule Parly Children who live on Florence avenue in San Anselmo will have a neighborhood Christmas party all their own on the evening of Dec. 22. For the fourth consecutive year, residents of the one-block street have joined to provide Christmas for each other.

There will be a six-foot Christmas tree, on which each child is to place an ornament. Santa Claus (or a reasonable facsimile) will pass out gifts to the children, contributed by parents on the block. Each mother will bake a dozen cookies, and fathers will provide coffee. And to keep the party warm, there will be a big; bonfire in mid-street, permis-j sion for which has been receiv-1 ed from the San Anselmo Fire! Department, announced Jerry Cruthers of the informal sponsoring committee. Peter Ledow has been named chairman for adults; Jack Coffey, chairman for children, and Leroy Curry, decorations chairman.

Two Marin Schools To Take Part In Novel Educational Experiment Two Marin high schools have been included among 13 chosen by the University of California to participate in a novel educational experiment. San Rafael and Sir Francis Drake High Schools, along with 11 others within commuting distance of Berkeley, will nominate promising seniors qualified and willing to attend two schools at once. From these nominees the Office of Relations with Schools expects to select 50 who may take up to six units of freshman university work while simultaneously finishing their final semester in high school. The candidates must meet quite a number of qualifications. No limit has been placed initially on how many names may be put forward by each school.

First they must be gifted students of demonstrated academic ability. They must be willing, and their parents must give permission, that they embark on a project obviously challenging and bound to tax them heavily. Although the university will pay the $60 incidental enrollment fee in each case, it will be up to the students to provide their own transportation and similar expenses. Their schools must arrange to give them freedom to get to Berkeley for university classes. Dr.

David B. Stewart, associate director of U.C.’s schools relations office, reported a sort of pilot experiment was made last year by the University of California at Los Angeles, which drew on only two nearby high schools. Although there was skepticism in some quarters, and a degree of opposition in the Academic Senate, grades achieved by the high school youngsters proved to be significantly higher than the average for regular university freshmen, Dr. Stewart said. The program is therefore to be repeated next semester in Los Angeles and Berkeley is starting it with a larger initial field of choice of candidates.

High schools participating, besides the two in Marin, are in San Francisco and various parts of the East Bay region, Dr. Stewart said. A spokesman for San Rafael High School said an effort will be made to decide on a list of nominees before the Christmas recess. No deadline was mentioned but the new semester opens in February. Ferry Van Damme Goes On Auction Block Soon An old-time auction is to be the latest means of selling the ferryboat Charles Van Damme, sometime flagship of the San Rafael-Richmond fleet.

But for obvious reasons they display the vessel when U.S. Marshal Frank 0. Bell mounts the San Francisco Post Office steps at 11 a.m. Thursday to start the bidding. Otherwise it should be a colorful proceeding, even though the Van Damme itself will be riding at anchor off the Arques shipyard in Sausalito while effort is made to change ownership for the second time in three years.

From ferry the boat became restaurant-bar, then Chinese restaurant, and finally was taken by one partner in the eating enterprise to satisfy claims against the others. An attache of the office will start proceedings on the post office steps by reading a decree of Judge William T. Swiegert in Federal District To Take AF Training Charles Robert Boyer, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.

ordering sale as result of a Patrick C. Warfield bankruptcy petition. Then the bidding will start- providing somebody is on hand with at least $5,000 or equivalent. While terms are an official explained today, even checks needn't necessarily be certified, as the marshal will size up the bidder and decide what constitutes on a basis of the individual. The office feels that the risk is minimized by the fact that pretty hard to run very far with a ferry, it was explained.

Warfield, wife and partner operated the ferry as an Oakland restaurant until bankruptcy interrupted with $48,000 assets, $184.000 debts. Probation Given In Stabbing Case Mrs. Mary Patricia Ann Parnow, 31, who stabbed her husband at their Villa Rafael home last July, must remain on probation for two years and undergo family or case work counseling. Judge Jordan L. Martinelli of Marin Superior Court sentenced her yesterday for battery.

Originally charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Mrs. Parnow later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of battery. San Rafael police said Mrs. Parnow cut Francis Parnow on his left arm with a kitchen knife after an argument at their home, 9 Junipero Serra.
