Country singer Hank Locklin, whose smooth tenor voice on hits like "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On" and "Please Help Me I'm Falling" marked a career that spanned half a century, has died. He was 91.

Locklin died Sunday at his home in Brewton, Opry publicist Jessie Schmidt said. She said the cause of death was not being released. Locklin helped usher in "the Nashville Sound" that gave country music a more lush feel. He performed on the Grand Ole Opry for 47 years. "I've been blessed to have hit songs that are timeless and appeal to the generations," he said in 2001.

He recently released his 65th album, "By the Grace of God." His "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On" was a hit in 1958 and "Please Help Me I'm Falling" in 1960. "Send Me the Pillow You Dream On," which Locklin wrote, also was recorded later by Johnny Tillotson and Dean Martin. He joined the Grand Ole Opry cast in 1960 and last performed there on Sept. 8, 2007, Schmidt said Locklin spent '19 years recording for RCA Records. His other hits included "Let Me Be the One," "Geisha Girl," "Why, Baby, Why" and "It's a Little More Like Heaven." In 2001, he released his first album in two decades, "Generations in Song." Vince Gill and Dolly Parton joined him on the LP.

Locklin, as much as any one else, popularized country music in Ireland where he often toured.

Good OVUS www.windowworldgreenville.com HISTORIC PAINTING AP PHOTO Professor Stanley Wells, left, chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace trust and one of the world's leading experts on Shakespeare studies according to the trust, poses Monday next to a newly discovered portrait of William Shakespeare, in central The portrait, thought to be almost the only authentic image of the writer made from life, has belonged to one family for centuries but was not recognized as a portrait of Shakespeare until recently. There are very few likenesses of Shakespeare, who died in 1616. Contemporary brush up on Shakespeare? Experts trying to determine authenticity of portrait By GREGORY KATZ Associated Press writer LONDON The Bard, or not the Bard? That is the question posed by Monday's unveiling of a centuries-old portrait of a dark-eyed, handsome man in Elizabethan finery. Experts say it is the only portrait of William Shakespeare painted during his lifetime in effect, the sole source of our knowledge of what the great man looked like. But they can't be certain.

In the shifting sands of Shakespeare scholarship, where even the authorship of the plays is sometimes disputed, nothing is written in stone. "We're 90 percent sure that it's Shakespeare," said Paul Edmondson, director of learning at the Shakespeare Learning Trust, which plans to exhibit the portrait in Stratford-on-Avon. Incredibly, the portrait has been in private hands for several centuries but the owners the Cobbe family had no idea the man in the painting was responsible for so many enduring masterpieces, All that changed three years ago, Edmondson said, when one of the Cobbes (he won't the National Portrait Gallery in London's Trafalgar Square to see a traveling exhibit called "Searching for Shakespeare." One of the first things he saw was a famous portrait of the Bard that usually hangs in the renowned Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington. "His jaw dropped," Edmondson said. "He realized he had one at home.

And the one he had at home turned out to be the original." Edmondson said the portrait is far superior to the copies made after Shakespeare's death, including the famous 1623 engraving that graces the cover of the First Folio collection of Shakespeare's plays. He said scholars are convinced it is Shakespeare because so many copies of the painting were made, including the one at the Folger, and because the painting was handed down through the generations along with a portrait of the Earl of Southampton, Shakespeare's main patron. The Cobbe collection curator, Mark Broch, spent three years researching the paint-, ing, and several sophisticated tests, including X-ray exami- nations, tree-ring dating on the wooden frame, and infrared imaging, were made to say which one) walked into determine its age.
