C-8 The Bradenton Herald, Friday, December 16, 1988 'Oliver' barks with excitement Review: Oliver Company Rating: Showing: Litchfield GLENN LOVELL Knight-Ridder Newspapers It's still nowhere near as savvy or confrontational as those Ralph (Fritz the Cat) Bakshi-animated features of the '70s, but Disney's Oliver Company is a snazzy step in the right direction, a streetwise variation on the studio's classic Lady and the Tramp. Based loosely (very loosely) on Dickens' Oliver Twist, this new feature-length cartoon tells of an orphaned Manhattan kitten who's adopted by a gang, of canine thieves that does the bidding of a nervous waterfront tramp named Fagin (who comes with Dom DeLuise's jolly wheeze of a voice). Fagin, in turn, jumps to the tune of a sinister gangster named Sykes (nicely snarled by Robert Loggia). If he doesn't make good on his debt to the mob, it's curtains for sure for the pooch-loving Fagin. But not to worry.

"New York's coolest quadruped," the Artful Dodger (the voice of Billy Joel), is on the job. This tenacious terrier has the world in his paws. Besides being top dog in Fagin's gang, he's a master of the diversionary con and something of a rakish dog about town. Naturally it falls to the Dodger to teach young Oliver the ropes. Providing their two cents from the sidelines are a theatrical bulldog named Francis (Roscoe Lee Browne), a dullard Dane named Einstein (Richard Mulligan), a cheeky Chihuahua named Tito (a Oliver and Dodger from the movie, Oliver.

scene-stealing Cheech Marin), and a sultry Afghan named Rita (Sheryl Lee Ralph of TV's It's a Living). Oliver and the gang become separated on one of their scavenger hunts, and Oliver lands in the lap of luxury when rescued by a lonely little rich girl named Jenny. Of course, life in the new household isn't all catnip. Jenny's instantly jealous poodle, Georgette, makes sure of this. Georgette sounds like Ethel Merman and lazes about like Cleopatra.

She's the pampered canis domesticus taken to hilarious extremes. And who did Disney get to voice Georgette's shrill egomania? Why, Bette Midler, of course. Midler has played this role in the flesh several times before. In another life she probably was a prize-winning poodle that basked before its sagging trophy case. Though only 70-some minutes long, Oliver Company tends to drag, especially when director George Scribner wanders from Fagin's dockside hideout.

It's here that the film manages the texture and rowdy appeal of some of Disney's animated triumphs. Once back on the street or in Jenny's Fifth Avenue digs the art work is sketchier and more impressionistic, and the story begins to tread water, waiting for the next song cue.
