The mare stolen from Mathias Eckhardt's place a few days ago, was recovered yesterday. It will be re membered that tbe fellow who stole her, resisted arrest at the junction of the main line and St. Louis branch of the Wabasb, and after exchanging shots with Officer Brewer, ran to Eckhardt's place, and took tbe mare in broad daylight He was followed to Harristown, but at this point the pursuers lost track of him. On yesterday Wm. Eckbardt learned that the mare was at Widow Bear's plane, at Bearsdale, and going to that village, he was rejoiced to find her.

The animal had been roughly handled, having been ridden rapidly through the mad, and made to go several without being fed. Sbe appeared at Widow Bear's on Thursday last, but wax minus the bridle which tbe thief took from Mr. Edwin Park's barn. Apparently he did not intend to steal the mare, but merely took her to effect his eecape. The mare is twenty years old, but is highly prized by the Eckhardt family on account of her gentleness, and service as a family horse.

At'caUoH Votera 2nd Want. The temperance voters of the 2nd ward will meet in city council rooms on Tuesday evening, April 1st, at 7:30 sharp, to nominate a candidate for alderman, and transact any other business that may come before the meeting. By order COMMITTEE. pov. St.

A very spare greeted one of the beat temperance lecturers in tbe field, and Intoned to an able and impressive address. That each a man, with such a lecture to deliver, should be greeted with each a house does net speak well for tbe earnestness of the temperance people here. Tfeoae who could pay two dollars to see' a pretty woman, and'hear a third-rate actress, tould not pay fifty oenta to hear the Neal Dow of tbe west giVe a powerful lecture on temperance. Tbe impression 'is' growing among' the keenest observers that ance people consists largely of those who are too stingy to spend a dime for'a drink of whiskey. Whiskey- men spend anouaHy.

-thousands of dollars.to carry their point; temper- anon employed at atar- vation rates, and it is to be feared that when the average temperance man puts a dime in his pocket it sings "farewell, vain world, I'm going hone." The lecturer began by stating be had frequently heard of'Our city and long wished to visit it, and httye a friendly talk with The principal part of the address related to the effects of the probibi tory constitution and laws of Kansas, lie said that after a full discussion of the subject npon both sides the con stitution was adopted in 1880 by a majority of 8,000 votes. There had been 972 prosecutions under the law, and 729 convictions, a greater per cent, of convictions than Illinois could show up MI prosecutions for murder or other crimes. -Fines imposed and collected under the law, imprisonments amount ing to eleven yearn and live months. It would be. difficult to convince those who have paid" these fines and served these sentences that probibi tion will not prohibit He said Kansas has suffered in population as i result of the law only in her peuiteu tiary, and the migration of 1,500 HH- 1'jon keepers, while tbe population of the state has increased steadily; a better class coming in than ever bo- fore.

The taxable property has increased Bitice the of the law 140,000,000. He touched npon the question of public sentiment which ho said was almost entirely in favor of prohioitioo. Party lines sunk; democratic candidates carrying republican districts against repobli cans where I be republican was not i prohibitionist and cm tersu. In this connection he said that his defeat for governor a year ago last fall was by no means a measure of the popular sentiment of Kansas upon the temperance question. Men may go down and with them their politics! aspirations, but is a principl nd is eternal, and, in Kansas, a iix ct.

"I need not," said he, "stop to noter into details as to the causes which led to that defeat. Personal matters are too small, too instigniti cant to ndmit of discussion here 'Let me say I would rather have my de'eat than his victory, rather go down, feeling myself in the right, than mount upon wrecks of human happiness, up on desolate hearths, and ruined bomea, to tbe hignest position in any land." Space forbids us to do justice to bis lecture which was rich in wit, wisdom and pathos Upon the efleet of temperance discussions upon party be said he pitied the party whose existence depended upon keeping morality out of politics. We need morality in politics, if any where. If there had beun more morality in politics there would have been no star route trials. He pro claimed for woman's suffrage and eulogized the late action Wyoming has taken in this matter.

The lecturer was frequently ap plauded, und every one left with the feeling that they bad seen and a grand, true man, whatever his political idiosyncrasies may be. Gov. St. John will lecture at the tabernacle this afternoon at three o'clock, and eg it is to be it, is hoped the temperance people will fill tbe building. Cliarsed With Forgery.

Mr. J. 11. Chamberlain, of Niantic, name to this city yesterday and swore ont a warrant for tbe arrest of L. Chambers, whom he charges with forging a $45 note on Robert Elder, a wealthy resident of Christian county.

The note was dated "September 23d, 1883," and is due ''one year from date at 0 per cent, interest" Chambers was arrested and taken before Squire Curtis, who continued his trial until Monday at one o'clock, and fix ed his bail at $200, in default of which he was committed to jail. He pre- tested his innocence, but said he would go to jail and after securing his release, he would commence suit for false imprisonment. It seems that Chambers owed, Chamberlain some money, and finally agreed to pay it by tranbfcrring to him the note, Mr. Chamberlain giv ing him $10 in cbnnge. He did not hesitate to take tbe note, knowing it was aa good as old gold if Mr.

Elder had given it. He notified Mr. Elder of having taken tbe note, and was somewhat astonished when that gentleman informed him that he had never given Chambers any. As soon he became aware of this, he bad Chambers arrested as above Elated. FOR THE Vault tMory "Dropped into a drug store the other Sunday.

A drug store is about the only place you can drop into on Sunday to have a quiet retired talk with out being ont. It's a pLacu where everybody bores everybody etoe. Goodj to telJ stories, spring ninety-days punv, and tell your experience. The remedies are all at hand, and there's no danger of a fellow getting so far gone but what he can be recovered. Now there arn't drug store in Decatnr that don't sell something else besides drugs.

Sometimes it's books, sometimes fiddles, sometimes baby old stocks of oigan, and whiskey--but that's a drug of course. There was the druggist, two tor-sitters and a young banker in the store. They were talking of tbe $27,000 robbery of the vaults of tbe B. railway at Chicago. -The druggist seemed to bink that thieves could so study the habits and every-" day programme of business me a and their help that the thief could make the fake and lay it on to the cashier or the clerks, or something like that.

Tbe young banker was satisfied that the robbery took place from within. However, be got off the subject a little bit and related a little vault story. Told them how he'd acted very carelessly in his bank once. He once was examining tbe currency inside the vault, and having a desire to give hia sucking qualities a rest, he laid his cigar on a ledge close at hand. The examination being over ho locks the safe.

The cigar was within. 'Twas a time lock arrangement. Then be described the anguish he experienced that night. The safe could not be opened till tho time lock said so. It was horrible.

The men have gotten off the conn ter and started for tbe door. The druggist asked them to not rush off so frantically, but they would go, as much as the druggist wanted them to stay. I ventured to state that cigars didn't catch very easy any bow. As near as I could remember I never saw but one boy could get a blaze from a lighted cigar. I thauked the proprietor for my space, he offered tbe second insertion on reasonable terms, and I made my exit.

Druggists are dreamy-looking people, and they will eat opium sometimes, but God knows the druggist makes the heart of the old farmer glad by giving him an almanac when he comes to town. UOBERT M. H. C. Allen, of Harrietown, was in the city yesterday.
