JbMflNST Morris Rivkin Pioneer In Sale of Wristwatches Graham Patterson Magazine Publisher time and demonstrations attracted considerable attention Rivkin was born in Russia emigrated to die US as a young man started out working at a variety of menial jobs and eventually financed the emigration and other support of' more than a dozen relatives from the old country He became social and business colleague of many important figures in commerce and was the first Jewish executive some of them had ever worked with Rivkin lived in Wood mere for about 20 years and on Caffrey Avenue Far Rockaway for some 15 years before that He died of a heart attack en route to a hospital yesterday morning He is survived by his wife Pauline three sons Philip of Montreal Canada Samuel of Manhattan and Bernard of East Meadow a brother Daniel Baker of Brooklyn six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren A funeral service is scheduled at noon Friday at Inc Rockville Centre Burial will be in Mount Ararat the country organizing retail distribution and sale of the wristwatclies at a time when the pocket watch was the commonly accepted personal timepiece At various times during his career Rivkin was sought out for his detailed knowledge of the jewelry industry by such firms as Bulova Elgin and Gruen In his business endeavors he organized a chain of jewelry stores principally in the New York City area Rivkin lived at 754 Broadway Wood mere until retiring here about seven years ago About 35 years ago Rivkin publicized the then novel claim of by the Swiss-made watches he sold by arranging demonstrations in which the watches were thrown against walls or dropped from airplanes Airplanes themselves were still pretty new to the public at that tion In 1939 he merged the Farm Journal with Wife magazine In 1943 he acquired Pathfinder a semimonthly magazine published in Washington He was a Republican and his articles reflected this viewpoint though he did not consider this a major component of the contents have to read Farm Journal very long to discover where its political sympathies lie but partisanship is a minor he said Patterson was born In Pittsburgh and attended Cornell University where he was president of the Christian Association and business manager of the yearbook In his high school days he had been in charge of advertising sales and of printing for the school magazine He was graduated from Cornell in 1904 and after that he was successively advertising manager for the Federal Electric Co of Chicago Chicago representative of Circle Magazine advertising representative of Suburban Life magazine and president of the Union Electrotype Co of Chicago In 1918 he became president and publisher of The Christian Herald a nondenominational weekly published in New York and also headed a fund drive for President Wilson to raise money for Chinese famine relief the same year He also headed the New York Bowery Mission and the Christian Herald Home in Nyack NY He was recruited for Farm Journal by its owners the Pew family of Pennsylvania whom he is reported to have advised at the time to be prepared to pay well for a publisher because it would be the best way they could spend their money 7 rv O' Chicago Graham Patterson 87 publisher of Farm Journal largest agricultural magazine in the country died Sunday Patterson became publisher of the Journal in 1935 installed modernized printing machinery and revamped the editorial staff and went on to build the circulation to 3000000 monthly He retired last year a3 chairman of the board of Farm Journal Inc after 17 years in that post Patterson insisted on the primary importance of agricultural production to the nation and toured agricultural regions to find out at first hand what farmers wanted to see in the publics- Joseph Mullin A Mayor at 61 Newburgh (AP) Services were scheduled today for Joseph Mullin 61 former Democratic mayor who led his party to control of city hall in 1964 for the first time in city history He died Sunday of a heart attack at St Hospital where he had been admitted Friday with chest pains Mullin pulled the' Democrats from their winless ways in the 1963 city elections and was himself vaulted into the mayoralty with an upset victory over Republican Joseph Fogarty His political fortunes reversed in the 1967 elections however and he lost reelection to George McKneally as the GOP recaptured the city During his tenure Mullen was credited with keeping tempers cool during the 1967 Newburgh disturbances He headed a committee to end a strike that had kept pocketbook workers out of work for 11 weeks and in a city where more than one-third the population is nonwhite he created the Newburgh Human Relations commission He is survived by a brother Mark and several nieces and nephews Jones Socialite member of the Daughters of the Cincinnati National Society of New England Women and the Society of the Descendants of the Mayflower She was a member of the Colony Wilson 84 a former under secretary of agriculture who advised President Franklin Roosevelt on farm problems and nutrition programs Wilson died Saturday of injuries suffered in a falL Wilson credited with developing the domestic allotment plan became the first wheat production administrator under the Agricultural Adjustment Act Later he helped establish and direct the subsistence homesteads division of the Interior Department Wilson also advised several other countries on farm problems He also helped establish the UN Food and Agriculture Organization He retired in -1953 His wife Ida a
