J. H. Bevaus. 8dGwl AT the next term of Circuit court which convenes in December, a jury will Impressive Services at the Family Residence. The last sad rites over the remains of the lute Mrs.

J. P. Eckels were eolemn- yesterday afternoon Rt 2 o'clock at the family residence on West William street, Bev. W. H.

Penhallegon, of tho First Presbyterian church, officiating. The residence was completely filled with relatives end friends ot the departed and the floral offerings were many and very beautiful, among them being ft pillow with the word ''mamma" in purple across the front. A beautiful pillow of flowers was sent by Morehonse, Wells also a lyre by the employes of the Lytle Eckels Company. The Presbyterian choir, composed of Mieac-s Ebert and Keeler and Messrs. C.

W. Montgomery and 0. Brown, famished appropriate music for the occasion. They Bang "Abide With Me" ut the request ot MM. C.

W. Harst, uiotht-r of the dejei.ssd. Bov, Penballogon without announcing the text read the following passage from the soriptureat "For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart aud be with Christ wh'ich is far better." The pastor said: "So spake one of the world's most distinguished men nearly nineteen centuries sgo. Death naturally waa not better, nor life worse to him than to us. He was not a disappointed man.

He had seen all sides of life, and passed through varied experiences. He knew what distinction was. He had been honored. He had aat upou the apex of earthly fame. He waa no stranger to happiness, He drank ut her fountain.

These things he gathered and put in the scales. Over againBt them he put the limitations, the disappointments, the sorrows and pains of life, and looking ht both he said. 'I am in a strait betwixt etc. That experience was not peculiar to him. He stands not alone the subject of migled feelings, and contending emotions.

Humanity has ever had to battle with these contending desires' There la 'much in life that causes ua to hold it with a ten- aoious grasp. The world in which we live ia full pf beauty. The blessings which it gives are rich and rare Its friendships are precious, the domestic ties sacred, the home blessed and life so sweet that we naturally cling to it. But there is another view. Life has its vicissitudes, cloudy daya follow the' sunshine, darknese follows the light, fnendahip's ties are shattered, health gives way, disease brings pain, life loses its charm and becomes a burden.

Then it is that one is led to eav, "I am in a strait betwixt two." Bev. Penhallegon then referred to-Mrs. Eckels. She had many things to hold her to life. She wna comparatively a young woman, with a Ifirge and inter- eating family.

She loved her husband and her children devotedly and was RB devotedly loved by them. She would have gladly lived for them, but disssse gained a mastery. Her suffering was great und physical existence became a burden. She too, like Paul, said I am in a strait, having a desire to depart and lie with Christ, which is far better." The pallbearers were A. H.

Mills, Henry A.Wood, George N. J. Huff, E. P. Morehouse ot Evansville, and Fred W.

DIED FBOM HIS XNJtTBIES. Engineer Woodruff, of the Illinois Central, Receives Fatal In- juries in a 'WreoH. George Woodruff, the welljknown Illinois Central engineer, met hiB doom yesterday afternoon in a railway accident at Arcola. At that place the T. H.

i- P. road crosses the Illinois Central track. A T. P. freight was crossing about 2 p.

m. yesterday and heid succeeded in getting all but one car across when a Central "light" came south toward the crossing at a rapid of speed. The Central engineer and fireman realized the danger and the fireman jumped. Woodruff remained at his poat. The big mogul engine struck the oar and overturned it, at the same time the engine overturning, catching the faithful engineer beneath the wreck.

Woodruffs legs were caught iu the debris, but his body was loose. A horrible death awaited him. "The escaping ateam and sculding water Boon enveloped him. Woodruff could talk with the men who were busy trying to extricate him from his positiu and he pleaded earnestly that some one kill him, that death would be preferable to the awtul suffering he was enduring. Will DoArmand, a farmer in the crowd, distinguished himself by his heroic work.

He knelt in the bojling water and with his hands and a spade dug the mud und soft earth from the engineer, finally succeeding in getting him out. Woodruff was carried to the Aroolo Hotel and physicians eummonded. At first it was thought he would survive the terrible scalding, but he grew worse and at 7 o'clock the poor man's sufferings were ended. He died from the internal, injuries he received. The deceased was a married man, 28 years of age and a resident of Champaign.

Funeral Escort to the G. A. B. Adjutant-General Eeece has issued the following general order: As a mark of respect to tho valiant and heroic services rendered by the brave volunteer soldiers during the war of 1861-66, it is urgently recommended that commanding officers of National Guard organizations furnish funeral ea- corts or firing 'parties at the burial of veteran soldiers, sailors or marines whenever these may bs applied for by local Grand Army poets or by the relatives of the deceased. In thus honoring the courageous men who formed the bulwark for the preservation of our Union in the days of its direst necessity the National Guardsman will honor himself und tho service to which he belongs.

The duty so performed should be one of love and gratitude, should bo attended by every member ot the organization who can possibly be present, and should be marked by that deep and reverent solemnity which such occasion demands. Sol Smith Russell. "Peaoetul Valley" is tho title of Mr. Russell's new play, which, it is said, has made very strong impression. The author, Mr.

Edward E. Kidder, who eluo wrote "A Poor Delation" for'Mr. Russell, has with extraordinary success in formulating another character which Bhoulrl successfully follow that of "Noah Vale" in "A Poor Belation." Mr. Russell, it is gratifying to know, has in ''Hoses, Howe" found another artistic triumph. No name connected with the drama is more thoroughly identified with pure, clean, legitimate comedy than that ot Sol Smith Russell.
