Freshman Rick Ferina adds to the solid backcourt depth. Illinois State will bid for another road victory Wednesday at Butler. The Indianapolis, club edged ISU last season on a last-second shot, and owns a victory over Ohio State of the Big Ten this winter. ISU's next home game is against Alabama-Huntsville next Saturday. The game was added to the schedule after NCAA regulations permitting a 27th game.

Wapella won the preliminary game, 57-56. AT WAPELLA Two games do not a season make, but Illinois State's basketball team is enjoying swift success under new coach Gene Smithson. The Redbirds are sailing with a2-0 record and a 114.5 scoring average. Their latest triumph, a 100-78 win at Long Island University, made believers in New York City a tough town to impress. LIU coach Paul Lizzo, former assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, gave the Redbirds rave "Illinois State has a terrific club," Lizzo said.

"ISU would be a problem for a lot of teams in the City. I never saw a team shoot like that." The Redbirds made 21 of 37 shots in the second half against LIU. Including totals from an opening 129-72 drubbing of Lewis University, Illinois State has made more than half of its field goal attempts. David Moore was Donovan's leading scorer with 24 points; Tom Frye had 17 and Mike Storms had 16. Tri-Point owns a 2-3 season record, while Donovan is 6-2. The Chargers led in rebounding, 39-21, with Howard Conkling accounting for he also contributed 15 points. David Lowe had 13 points and Bill McCaughey added 12. Donovan made 54 per cent of its field goal attempts, while Tri-Point hit 36 per cent from the field.

Tri-Point won the preliminary game, 53-34. FORREST-STRAWN-WING iced Fisher, 69-60, in a nonconference game at Forrest. Denny Stephens led the Eskimo attack, scoring 31 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Rollin Nussbaum added 16 points and Paul Honegger had 14. Jeff Ingrum was the Bunnies' only double figure scorer; he had 20 points.

Forrest-Strawn-Wing led in rebounding, 38-24. BILL BRANZ rammed in 28 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Odell to a convincing 84-58 victory over Reddick in a nonconference game at Reddick. In addition to Branz, Kevin Masching and Joe Foley chipped in with 15 and 16 points respectively for the Rams, who hit 50 per cent of their field goal attempts. Steve Oelschlager led Reddick with 22. The Bulldogs hit 46 per cent from the field.

With Branz, a six foot seven inch senior, doing most of the work, the. Rams had a commanding 43-23 edge in rebounds. Odell is 1-2 for the season, while Reddick drops to 0-4.
