Typiy 'yiry "r'gjiiim'iiui yijpi nyjinnywn Wednesday, Oct. 30, Cooper: Children's TV better than ever 'Jagged' edges out 4Krush' at box office Gary Dceb Jackie Cooper deserves to be i the Hollywood legend he is. From the child actor who wowed audi- eaces with the movie "Skippy" in 1931 to his more recent status as i producer and director of several of television's most outstanding programs, he's been involved in virtually every facet of filmmak-j ing, including a six-year stint as president of the Screen Gems TV production company. In Chicago the other day to em-j cee the Alpha Awards for excel-; lence in children's programming, Cooper declared that TV today serves youngsters much better 'than ever before. "No question," he said.

"It's much improved now over what it i was in the 1950s or '60s. I mean, as 1-dear as he was to a lot of kids, I don't think 'Howdy Doody' accom-j plished any good for young viewers. These days, in very subtle ways on so many programs especially 'Sesame Street' and 'Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood' the kids are getting educated and taught some important lessons in life. 4 -W lzenship.

Indeed, Cooper was the director for many episodes during the first two seasons of "MASH," and although the final result was terrific, he continually banged heads with series star Alan Alda. "Alan really didn't want to do a TV series at that time," Cooper told me. "He wanted to be a film actor and he was and is a very good actor, as well as a good writer and director. I think Alan was pretty nervous and uptight in those early days of and he also had an ego problem at that time. I mean, reporters would walk onto our set and many of them didn't know who Alan was, but they knew me.

That created a little problem. "When we were doing those first- and second-year episodes of we knew we had a terrific show. But we certainly had no idea that one day it was going to be regarded as a real classic and we sure as hell didn't imagine that it would ever run for 11 years. Cooper now devotes nearly all his time to directing TV shows and such as the recent Jackie Gleason-Art Carney reunion in "Izzy and Moe." Gary Deeb is a syndicated entertainment columnist. HOLLYWOOD (AP) "Jagged Edge," a courtroom thriller starring Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges, took the No.

1 position at the box office over the weekend, while the rap-music movie "Krush Groove" debuted in second place. Up a notch from the previous week, "Jagged Edge" brought in $3.2 million to boost its four-week total to $18.4 million, unseating Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Commando." "Krush Groove," the Warner release starring singer-percussionist Sheila picked up $2.9 million. "Commando" dropped from the top to No. 3 in its fourth week, grossing $2.8 million for an overall total of $26.4 million. The long-running "Back to the Future" brought in $2.4 million to raise its 17-week total to $170 million.

Orion's "Remo Williams" was fifth at $1.9 million, followed by "Agnes of God" at $1.5 million, "Silver Bullet" at $1.5 million, "Better Off Dead" at $1.2 million, "After Hours" at $1.1 million, and "Sweet Dreams" at $1 million. Here are the Top 10 movies at the box office this past weekend, with distributor, weekend ICA'S Jackie Cooper starred in and directed for CBS. It's very unfortunate, but some kids want to grow up to be like the violent heroes they see on TV. But let's face it it's up to the parents to monitor what their children are watching. And the parents aren't doing that; they get very bad marks from me." As Cooper grew to middle age, he became associated with sophisticated, adult programs, nearly all of which espoused a humanistic approach to life.
