Obituaries Alexander Meiklejohn, Noted Liberal Educator Alexander Meiklejohn At Wisconsin, he continued his experimentation as philosophy professor under another liberal, Dr. Glenn Frank. They established the Experimental College in 1927, drew students from the lower classes and replaced classes with conferences, lectures and discussions. Students and faculty lived together in what was designed to be a -sufficient intellectual community. There were no grades or exams.

Students studied Athens' Golden Age one year and U.S. industrial civilization the next. The college, accused of fostering everything from Bolshevism to free love, closed after a few years. Meiklejohn moved to San Francisco where he started a pioneering adult education program. It had several hundred persons delving into philosophy until World War II ended it.

In 1949 he accused the House Un-American Activities Committee of planning film censorship. In 1953 he called lovalty oaths unconstitutional. Berkeley, Calif. (AP)-Alexander Meiklejohn, noted American educator, died last night at his home. He was 92.

Meiklejohn had been ill with pneumonia for three days prior to his death. He had lived in Berkeley since the 1930s when he ended his active academic life that included the presidency of Amherst College from 1912 to 1923. A native of England, Meiklejohn came to the U.S. when he was 8. He was educated at Brown and Cornell universities and began his long teaching career in the philosophy department at Brown, In 1926 he moved to the University of Wisconsin where he headed the experimental college.

In December 1963 President Johnson awarded him the Medal of Freedom, highest civilian honor of the U.S. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nannine Meiklejohn of Berkeley; a daughter, Mrs. Ann Stout, a psychologist at the University of California's Institute of Human Development, and three sons, Kenneth, a Washington, D.C. attorney; Donald, a professor of philosophy at Syracuse University and Gordon, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado.

Meiklejohn was a liberal in education and politics. His innovations as president at Amherst stirred up such a storm that he was asked to resign. He reshaped the curriculum and emphasized social sciences, placing a student board in control of student conduct. When he was forced to resign, eight Faculty members quit in protest and 12 seniors and one post-graduate student refused to accept their Alexander Meiklejohn diplomas.
