HARROD D. C. DIRECTOR GROUP DIAGNOSTIC OFFICES 1611 PINE AVE. PHONE 614-85 Noted Swedish Scientist Discusses Possible 'Secret Weapon' Nazis Claim By DR. KAI SIEGBAHN Noted Swedish Scientist, Member of the Swedish Academy of Science (Copyright 1943, by International Service) STOCKHOLM.

Dec. 25. (INS) -In connection with Germany's more and more pressing situation on the various battle fronts, the eleventh hour possibility that the Germans may introduce a hitherto unknown weapon capable of changing the fortunes of war is being discussed. Many German especial? ly after the severe allied air lattacks this fall, have declared that the introduction of such a new weapon is only a question of time. It goes without saying that this weapon, if able essentially to affect the fate of the war, must have qualities hitherto unknown.

The construction of a new gun or a new type of aircraft is not enough. Guesses concerning this new "secret weapon" have been many. They have mentioned guns with rockets weighing 30 tons and able to reach a distance of 200. kilometers (about 125 miles). Special interest has also been expressed in the so called uranium bomb.

This idea is of special significance because it represents the first time man has seriously thought of the possibility of devoting the gigantic energy supply bound up in atoms to human destruction. This subject became of immedlate interest as recently as 1939 through the discovery of a German scientist, Dr. Otto Hahn. A few years earlier it was known that if radium and beryllium were mixed, this compound sent out radiation particles, so called neutrons, which, hardly losing speed, could pierce the thickest steel armor. Electrically uncharged, the neutrons enter into the very nucleus of the atom, in many cases one element into anothermodern form of alchemy.

Working with the heaviest of all elements uranium. Hahn found a process um is a softer than marked chemical Uranium split into parts, liberating nucleus a colossal quantity of The bursting uranium atom also created more neutrons which cokHiding with 16ther uranium atoms again liberated energy and more nutrons. The chain process increase like an and unmeasurable speed the of reaction ought to take form of one single terrific tion of energy or an explosion hitherto unknown Fortunately for Hahn and his collaborators, it did not happen that way. But there was strong reason to expect some new device could direct the reaction in this violent manner. Scientists all over the world began attacking this problemone of the greatest science has ever met.

Soon it was evident that spliting uranium was more complicated than anticipated. The element uranium has two atoms, so called isotopes, differing little in weight. Of these two kinds of uranium only the lighter is able to "explode (This lighter type of uranium is called uranium 235.) One difficulty that the lighter isotope is contained in the uran-ium compound only in the proportion of one part to 139. Paradoxically, this lighter kind of uranium bursts only when the "bombarding" neutron sufficiently slow. You cano brakes on them not with lead paraffin.

Experiments show that probably necessary to bring, away the undesired heavier in order to establish the violent chain reaction described above. Such an isotope separation was Churchill's Health Reported Improving LONDON, Dec. Minister Winston Churchill today was reported to be making steady progress and gaining strength in his bout with pneumonia contracted in the middle east. The report on his continued imI provement was contained in a bulletin issued at 10 Downing street, the prime minister's official residence. made 10 years ago when the components of ordinary water were separated to develop "heavy" water which is now produced industrially.

water is used mainly in chemical and biological research. Its freezing point is higher and its specific gravity greater than ordinary water, from which it is derived.) But uranium separation is probably meeting with special difficulties peculiar to uranium. One of the most important instruments of these researches is the cyclotron, invented by an American scientist, Prof. Ernest O. Lawrence of the University of California, who won the Nobel prize in physics for 1939.

There are numbers of these complicated machines in the United States and also Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Denmark and Sweden have such cyclotrons in operation. The Germans have not built a cyclotron, but they have seized first the Paris cyclotron at the Curie-Joliot's radium laboratory, and more recently Dr. Niels Bohr's cyclotron in Copenhagen. Despite all the secretiveness about research into the uranium problem, I venture to say that the uranium bomb is still nonexistent except as a research objective. It is rather difficult to say if it is possible at all to construct such a bomb.

For the present, it seems as if the essential link is missing for making the uranium bomb a reality. And, perhaps, we should be grateful for this situation. A box of matches filled with uranium energy is 'a big enough quantity to blow a modern battleship one mile up into the air. As terrible as uranium energy may be as an instrument of war, it may also be able to perform valuable peaceful service one kilogram (a little over two pounds) of the lighter uranium isotope is the equivalent of 18,000 kilograms (about 39,600 pounds) of coal, if and when involved problems of atomic research are solved. At this time of the year we extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to our patrons.
