Ernie Holbrook's lads anything but potent last Saturday night in the conference opener at Westwood, when UCLA tacked a 33 to 19 setback on the Trojans. It was the second time in 14 years of court play that SC had bowed to a Uclan quintet, and it was the lowest number of points made in conference play by a Trojan team since 1932. The Trojans are not without possibilities, however.

Forward Bob Howard, former Long Beach jaysee and Oregon State flash, looked very good in bucketing 11 points, and Jim Econ, Troy's other first string forward, looked capable of causing plenty of trouble for opposing cagers, but lacked con- sistency, Capt. Dick Bailey, Troy's only returning letterman, was the defensive standout of the evening, but failed to garner a single point throughout the entire fray. The Bear game will be the last chance for the Trojans to give coach Holbrook a conference triumph, as the SO mentor will be inducted on the Monday following the fray. "Nibs" Price, the man who runs the Bears' basketball interests, may surprise the local squads and come up with a real winner, but from advance information the Bear five is reported to have little to offer in the way of a dangerous outfit. Back for another year with Coach Lyle Kinnear are Capt. Jack Peters, shortstop; Phil Chauvin, first base; Jack Wray, catcher; Joe Perez and Ev Pearson, outfielders, and pitcher Gordon Sandberg, who won five and lost no games last year. Last spring Poly's horsehiders won 14 and lost two games for an .875 percentage.

-TUESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1944 SPORTS Eastern Grid Moguls Say Kicking Out of Bounds Must Stop Eastern football officials recommended today that the practice of deliberately kicking off out of bounds be stopped. Put forward in the form of a suggestion to the rules committee, the whistle tooters, at their annual meeting, urged the use of a tee for high kickoffs. If the kickoff still goes out of bounds they would have the receiving team put the ball in play at midfield, instead of the 35 yard line as at present. The officials also favored elimination of the present offside rule so that the team first offside would be penalized. In addition they suggested a 15 yard penalty for running into the kicker or the elimination of the present penalty, which is five yards and a first down.

The officials reelected Calvin Bolster president and voted to make overtures to southern and midwestern officials in an effort to make the Eastern association national in scope.
