Obituaries ubiibibbu Rev John LaFarge Was 83 Preacher of Social Justice graduated from Harvard University Then following a call he said he expienced when he was 11 he entered a seminary at Innsbruck Austria After his ordination in 1905 he entered the Society of Jesus a teaching and missionary order After a round of parish assistantships in the United States he moved closer to the educational field and helped found the Cardinal Gibbons Institute an agricultural' secondary school for Negroes in Maryland Later he began writing articles for America usually on racial or social problems Then he joined its staff serving as editor in chief from 1944-48 The liberal policies of the magazine earned him a handwritten letter of praise from Pope Pius XII He was an associate editor of the organ when he died He authored eight books most of them illuminating his position in a changing Comdex world His last "Reflections on Crowing Old was published last month Father LaFarge was a notable man in a notable family His father John was a muralist and painter His mother a convert was a great-grandaughter of Benjamin Franklin One of his brothers was architect Christopher LaFarge who helped design the Cathedral of St John the Divine His nephew was Oliver LaFarge the Pulitzer prize-winning author A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at IP AM today in St Ignatius Loyala Church Park Avenue and 84th Street Burial will follow at Loyola Seminary Shrub Oak NY a hamlet near PeekskilL New York Funeral services will be held today for the Rev John LaFarge distinguished religious leader and champion of social justice who died Sunday at the age of 83 lie will be buried near Pcckskill following a mass here A member of the noted artist-writer LaFarge family the priest was one of the most respected Father LaFarge a native of Newport RI was Rebekah Halee at 62 Ex-Broadway Actress Long Beach Services will be conducted tomorrow for Mis Rebekah Halee 62 former Broadway actress who died Saturday in Long Beach Memorial Hospital after a brief illness She lived at 618 Penn St Mrs Halee was bom in Greenville SC and went to New York for a career on the stage She appeared in vaudeville productions during the early 1920s Using the stage name Becky Cauble she later moved to the Broadway musical comedy circuit appearing in such productions as and featured in the latter opposite Al Jolson After the 1920s she became a radio actress and in more recent years appeared on television in comedy roles and commercials Her husband the late Roy Halee also was a vaudeville entertainer and was the voice of Mighty Mouse in the Teriytoon series of movie funnies He died in 1960 She is survived by a daughter Alice and two sons Roy Halee and David Faulkner Services will be conducted at 10 AM tomorrow at the
