a a a a a 6A Saturday, April 5, 1997 YK NR PC MK Gannett Newspapers Obituaries Inell E. Potillo, 65: Inell E. Potillo, a Peekskill resident, died Wednesday, April 2, 1997, at her home. She was 65. A retired youth counselor, Mrs.

Potillo worked at Woodfield Cottage Detention Center in Valhalla for about 20 years. She lived in Pelham for 20 years before moving to ago. Sept. 4, 1931, Jones Craft where she was Donald Potillo, retired counselor died on Oct. 27, 1984.

She enjoyed knitting, reading the Bible, cooking and spending time with her family, said her daughter, Beatrice Watson of White Plains. She is survived by two other daughters, Joyce Washington and Kim Potillo, both of White Plains; two sons, George David Johnson of Beacon, N.Y., and Larry S. Johnson of Cortlandt; two sisters, Mary Coleman of Jetersville and Julia Miller Hartsdale; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, and a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Lee's Funeral Home in White Plains.

Burial at Kenisco Cemetery in Valhalla will follow the funeral. James Short, 83: retired building superintendent superintendent dent, Mr. Short was a caretaker and groundskeeper at the estate of Lloyd Stratton in Irvington. He worked at Burnham Boiler Co. in Irvington from 1932 to 1946.

Mr. Short was a former secretary of the Irvington Fire Department. He had been a member of the department since 1935. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. In addition to his wife, Mr.

Short is survived by a son, Carl E. of Putnam Lake; a daughter, Joan C. Cristello of Patterson; a brother, Frank Short of Yonkers; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Dwyer Funeral Home in Patterson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Irvington Fire Department, Main Street, Irvington, N.Y. 10533. Hugh J. Greechan 77: retired bank officer Hugh J. Greechan a former Rye resident and bank vice president who survived the Pearl Harbor attack, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at Florida Hospital-Waterman in Eustis, Fla.

He was 77. Mr. Greechan was born June 6, 1919, in Mamaroneck to Hugh and Rose Cassan Greechan. He graduated from St. Gabriel's High School in New Mr.

Greechan served in the U.S. Army for six years. He left the service as a captain in 1945. He was a captain in the Air Force Reserve during the Korean War. He married Edwina Balls in December 1942 in Rye.

She died in 1992. Mr. Greechan retired as a vice president of the National Bank of Westchester in 1982 after 30 years working for the bank. He moved to Mount Dora, that year. Mr.

Greechan was active in several Rye community groups. He was a Inell E. Potillo Peekskill five years She was born on to Lloyd and Mamie in Jetersville, raised and educated. Her husband, James L. Short, a former Irvington resident and retired building superintendent, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon, Conn.

He was 83 and had been a resident of Wassaic, N.Y., for the past 15 years. Mr. Short had been employed as superintendent of an apartment complex in Irvington for 35 years until his retirement in 1981. He was a member Building Service Employees Union Local 32. He was born 12, 1913, in Dobbs Ferry to Vincent and Venza Maliggait Sciotto.

graduated from Dobbs Ferry High School. He married Genevieve Jenkinson in January 1930 in Irvington. She died in 1964. Mr. Short married Aida Baldassarre on Dec.

17, 1967, in Irvington. Before becoming a superinten- member of the Rye Fire Department for 30 years, serving as a captain and warden. He was an usher for the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. An avid fisherman, he was a member of the founding commission for the Rye Municipal Marina. Mr.

Greechan was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Retired Officers Association 1. and the American Legion. He married Alice Duff in 1994 in Mount Dora. In addition to his wife, Mr. Greechan is survived by a brother, Harry Greechan of Denver; two sons, Daniel Greechan of Ossining and Hugh Greechan of Rye; two daughters, Rosemary Sexton of South Portland, Maine, and Kathleen Roberts of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Maria van Veenendaal, 86: retired Yonkers building superintendent Maria van Veenendaal, retired superintendent of a Yonkers apartment building, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, Pa. She was 86 and had lived in Martinsburg, since January. She was superintendent at 70 Sherman Ave.

from about 1954 until about 1990, when she retired. She continued to live in the building until January. Mrs. van Veenendaal was born Aug. 28, 1910, in Utrecht, Holland, to Gerardus and Maria van Beek.

She grew up there and married Gerrit van Veenendaal in Utrecht on March 25, 1936. She came to the United States in November 1952 and spent a couple of years in the Bronx before settling in Yonkers. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth van Veenendaal of Duncansville, two sons, Hendrik "Hank" of Duncansville and Gerald of San Antonio; a brother and two. sisters in Holland; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. Her husband died Nov.

23, 1996. A daughter, Irene Maroon, also died earlier. The funeral will be private, with burial in Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale. Sorge Funeral Home in Hollidaysburg, handled arrangements. 16602. The Rev. Herbert N. Cunningham, 75: former insurance salesman and pastor The Rev. Herbert N.

Cunningham of White Plains, a former pastor, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at the Nathan Miller Center for Nursing Care in White Plains. He was 75. Father Cunningham was an insurance salesman in the White Plains area and later worked in the dietary department of Grasslands Hospital in Valhalla before becoming an ordained minister for the Church of God in Christ in 1971. He was an associate pastor at New Calvary Church in Yonkers and a longtime member of the Lonnie White Memorial Church of God in White Plains. He was born Dec.

17, 1921, to Isaac and Florence Patterson Cunningham in White Plains. He was raised and educated in Greenburgh, graduating from Greenburgh High School in 1939. Survivors include a brother, Milton of the South Ozone Park section of New York City. A brother, Joseph, and a sister, Edna Whiting, died earlier. Visitation will be at noon Monday at the Lonnie White Memorial Church of God in White Plains with funeral services at 1 p.m.

Burial will be in White Plains Rural Cemetery. Lee's Funeral Home in White Plains is handling arrangements. Fannie Sugarman, 101: retired teacher Fannie Sugarman, a longtime Bronx resident who spent the last 11 years in a New Rochelle nursing home, died Tuesday, April at the United Hebrew Geriatrics Center in New Rochelle. She was 101. She was born July 15, 1895, in Slonim, Poland, to Sam and Lena Lidofsky.

She moved to the United States at age 8 and settled in New York City. She lived in the Bronx for most of her life until entering the home in 1985. She was married to Phillip Sugarman, who died in 1963. Jochol Johns 75: truck driver Jochol Johns a truck driver and Yonkers resident, died Thursday, 3, 1997, at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He was 75.

Mr. Johns worked for Hope's Windows in Yonkers for 30 years. He was a member of Local 456 of the Teamsters union in Elmsford. He was born June 4, 1921, in the Bronx to William L. and Helena Ragsdale Johns.

He moved to Yonkers 73 years ago, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School. He later studied music at Westchester Community College in Greenburgh. Mr. Johns served in the merchant marine from December 1943 to November 1944. On Nov.

25, 1944, he and Gladys Clarissa Johnson were married in Yonkers. Mr. Johns was past chaplain of James H. Farrell Lodge No. 34 of the Masons, and a past president Anton Mezich, 43: native of Croatia Anton Mezich, a Bardonia resident, died Thursday, April .3, 1997, at Nyack Hospital.

He was 43. Mr. Mezich was born July 23, 1953, in what is now Croatia to Anton and Maria Mezich. The family immigrated to the United States when he was a small child. He lived in West Nyack before he moved to Bardonia seven years ago.

He was a refrigeration engineer for Saxony Ice Leasing in Mamaroneck. In addition to his father of New Hyde Park, N.Y., Mr. Mezich is survived by his wife, Janie of Bardonia; a brother, Marino Mezich of New Hyde Park; and three sisters, Mariza Linardio of Astoria, N.Y., Lillian Lurio of New Hyde Park and Rosa Matwa of Cold Spring. Calling hours will be tomorrow at the Joseph W. Sorce Funeral Home, 728 West Nyack Road, West Nyack.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Parish Church, Nanuet. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery.

Celia Olitsky, 74: ex-Yonkers resident Celia Olitsky of New City died Friday, April 4, 1997, at Nyack Hospital. She was 74. She was born Sept. 25, 1922, in New York City to Zelig and Goldie Meltzer. On Oct.

22, 1939, she married Robert Olitsky. Mr. Olitsky died in May 1993. Before moving to New City in 1994, Mrs. Olitsky lived in the Bronx and Yonkers.

When her husband retired in 1980, they moved to Boca Raton, Fla. Mrs. Olitsky lived at Friedwald House in New City for the past two years. Mrs. Olitsky is survived by two daughters, Sharon H.

Schuman of New City and Glenda Wachtel of Yonkers; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister died previously. The family will observe a period of mourning at the Schuman home in New City. Services will be private. Louise Castle Herrick, 95: former teacher Louise Castle Herrick, a Rye.

resident, died Thursday, April 3, 1997, at the Osborne Home in Rye. She was 95. She was born Jan. 4, 1902, to Montague Castle. She was a former elementary school teacher.

Raffaela Vetrano, 93: New Rochelle resident of the Runyon Heights Men's Club, both in Yonkers. He also belonged to El Jamal Temple No.

185 in Ossining. Mr. Johns was an active member and a pastor's aide at Metropolitan AME Zion Church in Yonkers for 43 years. He was a past president of the choir, a member of the Men's Club and the senior choir of the church. He was a foster father for more than 30 years.

Mr. Johns also managed a Little League baseball team in the Bryn Mawr section of Yonkers. He loved to sing in many church choirs, his wife said. In addition to his wife, Mr. Johns is survived by six sons, Jochol Johns Mark A.

Johns, Joseph Mitchell, Clarence Mitchell, Roosevelt Corisby and Thomas Corisby, all Yonkers; three daughters, Marsha Johns, Helena "Terry" Stevens and Clarissa Johns, all of Yonkers; a brother, Daniel Johns of Wallkill, N.Y.; two sisters, Madeline Gonzalez of Meherrin, and Alyce Smith of Yonkers; and nine grandchildren. Four brothers died earlier. Visiting hours are tomorrow at Metropolitan AME Zion Church, 76 Belknap Ave. in Yonkers. The funeral will be at noon Monday at the church, followed by burial in Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers.

25-year resident of New Rochelle, died Friday, April 4, 1997, at the Sound Shore Medical Center's Howe Avenue Nursing Home in New Rochelle. She was 93. Mrs. Vetrano was born Sept. 5, 1903, in Dobbs Ferry to Carmelo and Maria Conte Del Medico.

She lived in the Bronx, where she attended public schools, then in Mount Vernon before moving to New Rochelle in 1972. She married Vincent Vetrano on Jan. 19, 1924, at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Bronx. Her husband died in 1961. Mrs.

Vetrano was a communicant of Holy Family Church in New Rochelle. She is survived by a daughter, Marion De Rosa of New Rochelle; a son, Joseph Vetrano of Yonkers; a brother, Armond Del Medico of Bridgeport, and two sisters, Lillian Carozza of Rye Brook and Yolanda Damone of Stratford, Conn. Four brothers, Pat, Emil, Joseph and Albert Del Medico, died earlier. Sisto and Paino Funeral Home in New Rochelle is handling the arrangements. Olivia Moura DeMelo, 79: native of Brazil Olivia Moura DeMelo, who was born in Brazil and lived in New Rochelle for 33 years, died Friday, April 4, 1997, at Sound Shore Medical Center of Westchester in New Rochelle.

She was 79. She was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Rio de Janeiro to Jose and Amelia Rodrigues Rua DaSilva. She moved with her family to Portugal when she was 9. In the 1940s, she married Joao DeMelo in Portugal.

Mrs. DeMelo and a son, Antonio, moved to the United States in December 1963. Other family members moved to the United States in 1965 and 1969. Mrs. DeMelo was a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament Church in New Rochelle.
