Orange Not Tliat Much Octhber 15. 1961 hixuuln juiitAiittx I Battered Foe Has Respect for Huskers 35 a A 1 LINCOLN SUNDAY JOURNAL AND STAR After the final play of the Nebraska-Syracuse football fgame, the defeated Cornhuskers headed for the locker Iroom, many not trying to hide their disappointment at losing for the first time this season. But the booming voice of assistant coach George Kelley cut the gloom. those heads he ordered. off with your heads high.

right, get up. there, Bob, hold your head It served to give the Huskers just a bit of a lift, perhaps the feeling that in losing they had not disgraced themselves nor needed to feel ashamed. In the final moments of the 4th quarter, the unit that had prevented a shutout by driving in for a touchdown, trudged to the bench. Thuiiiler Saddened Someone congratulated Thunder Thornton for getting the TD and he replied, just had it in my mind to get like to get a couple, more but 1 guess there be Thornton slumped on the bench, next to Willis Ross, and groaned, we should have won. They hit that hard.

And they hit pretty hard, but not this much better than Jim Huge stepped over and told Tingelhoff, just this bad, it was those interceptions. But we fought we play like this every game, nobody else will beat Tackle Bob Jones, who had fought the heavy Syracuse forwards all afternoon, said, hit pretty darn In the locker room, following a few words from coach Bill Jennings, the Huskers stripped off sweat-soaked equipment, quickly showered and dressed.

Buttoning up his white shirt, end Dick McDaniel said Syracuse was all right, but they any better than too bad 36,000 fans out there didn know just how close a game it really McDaniel said. were in better physical condition and had on the ropes the last quarter. The protection was good enough that I have had that many interceptions.

We were hitting em pretty good.

We were out to beat and when you do that YOU try a lot of things and can make mistakes. Trainers reported no serious injuries showed immediately after the game, other than the usual bumps and bruises. By Jim Raglin There many congratulatory handshakes in the Syracuse dressing room. It was a proud, but physically battered band of footballers who quietly discussed their 28-6 win over Nebraska. Big tackle Dick Feidler feared for a while that his hand was broken; even bigger tackle John Brown had a sore right paw; ace quarterback Dave Sarette had a badly braised shoulder; his replacement, Bob Lelli had broken a hand.

Despite the big bulge on the scoreboard, the Orange admitted they had been in a battle against the huskers. Better Than Maryland The 215-pound Feidler, a senior standout, thought Nebraska was better than Maryland, the only team to whip Syracuse in 4 games this season. moved their line, but the backs were tough. had a good team and we did a good he concluded. Center Bob Stem, singled out by coach Ben Schwartzwalder for top play, said, backs were faster then we thought they would He agreed with Feidler that NU was better than Maryland.

Star Syracuse back, the magnificient Ernie Davis go along with that. While parrying with the press after his Syracuse football team whipped Nebraska, Orange coach Ben Schwartzwalder was told prospect you wrote is here to see Genial Ben, puffing up a clatch of clouds on a sizable stogie, seemed puzzled, say the kid says I wrote he asked. Each time Coach Ben gang responded magnificently. They drove 99, 98 and 92 yards for touchdowns. This took care of the offensive end for the Orangemen. Three nifty pass interceptions took care of the Husker attack. Two of them halted Husker scoring threat and the 3rd was turned into a 50-yard touchdown run by end Walt Sweeney.

Only when Thornton took a pitchout from quarterback Denny Claridge and swept into the end zone late in the game, did Nebraska escape a shutout. The score came with 2:13 left in the game to cap a 58-yard drive in 7 plays. Until that time the Huskers had been their own worst enemies as Thornton and fullback Rudy Johnson ran wild off a slightly altered version of the pro offense. As far as Nebraskans were concerned, Thornton won an individual duel with great All-American halfback Ernie Davis. Nothing detracted a i performance.

He scored twice to establish a new school record of 27 touchdowns in a career, breaking Jimmy record of 25. But while Davis gained 120 yards in 22 carries behind the powerful blocking of his line, Thornton was good for 133 yards on 15 carries, an i average of nearly 9 yards a carry. The ease with which the MI sweeps were working against the Orange must have caught the Husker quarterbacks by surprise, But the clock was running out and Nebraska got off 3 plays and wound up back on the 29 as Claridge was tossed 01 the last effort by the hard-charging Syracuse line. Nebraska dominated the second half as Syracuse could get just 5 first downs. The Huskers marched to the Syracuse 9 but lost the ball I on downs.

They got another chance Stuewe galloped back 25 yard with a punt to the Syracuse 33. Taking the opening kickoff, This drive got 10 but Nebraska moved 45 yards in on first down, Meade's pass 4 plays with Thornton. John-' was intercepted in the end son and Willie Ross romping, by halfback John With second down and one Humphreys and lugged out yard to go at the Syracuse to the 9-yard line. 24, Claridge tried to catch Syracuse napping. His pass was intercepted at the 2-yard line on a fine effort by Orange (luarterback Dave Sarette.

This signaled the first march by the Orange and ruined chances to get the lead Ninety-eight yards Syracuse went with halfback Pete Brokaw slanting in the final 23 yards as safety man slipped and fell on the play. A pass for the two-point conversion was out of bounds, Ron Meade took over the throttle near the end of the first half and hit a couple of passes to End Dick McDaniel as the Huskers still tried to get their air arm clicking. In the 4th period, stung again by a Claridge quick kick that traveled 68 yards to the 8-yard line, Syracuse rolled 92 yards 12 plays with Davis darting over from the 1-yard line Quarterback Bob Lelli ran the extra points to make it 28-9. The Huskers quit. Johnson returned the kickoff 42 yards to the Husker 42 Thornton rambled for 33 yards and Claridge made 8 on a rollout.

Finally, it was on the 3 and Thornton to be denied as he swept the left side to score. There was a bad pass from center on the extra point try.
