Lexington board hears police, finance reports LEXINGTON (PN) Business transacted Wednesday night at a meeting of the Lexington Village Bord was confined mainly to a rendering of the, police and finance rports and to a discussion of action pending by council to repair a drain pile at the Lexington Community School. The police report for the month of November showed 28 traffic citations, seven issued as warnings, nine for illegal parking and 12 for speeding. There were 21 complaints handled, one traffic accident investigated and one animal impounded. Those persons issued speeding tickets ere clocked at an average of 48.3 miles per hour for 30 mile-per-hour zones.

The council finance report showed a receipt of $3,045.04 sales tax by the' village forthe month of August. The board decided tohave the Lexington Community School board contact a contractor who several months agodamaged a drain pile while erecting a chain-link fence around the new parking lot of the school. The council is seeking to have the pile repaired or its damage paid for by the contractor. ling is Boice, not Boyce. Tazewell's de deputies picket court, store By Rick Baker PEKIN-There was activity inside and outside the Tazewell County courthouse Wednesday.

Off-duty Tazewell County sheriff's deputies doffed their holsters and uniforms in favor of winter garb and picket signs, and marched around the courthouse, while Tazewell County State's Atty. C. Brett Bode filed a complaint against the county merit commission. Initiating their informational picketing two days after originally planned, the deputies marched at the courthouse, the McKenzie Building which houses government offices and Steger's, a furniture store. The furniture tore is owned by Louis Steger, a county board member who voted gainst a 10 per cent, or $900, increase at a county board meeting last month.

Deputies said they would picket other businesses owned by board members or which employ members of the board who voted against the 10 per cent pay hike, The increase was defeated by an 18-6 vote of the board, in favor of an eight per cent increase. Steger said the pickets were the first in front of his store in the business's 37-ear history, but he said he would not change his mind and vote for the requested pay boost. "I just didn't feel it would be fair to the taxpayers of this county to vote for that much of an increase and I still don't fee it would be fair. "I can't speak for other members of the board but I seriously doubt the board AUTOMOTIVE 915 Trucks, Truck Trailers FORD -Pickup 1972, Sport Custom plus extra chrome, 360 V-8 with most extra's, has Winter tune-up and 2 new snow tires, low mileage, perfect condition. 'til 8 P.M. will have a special meeting to have a discussion with the deputies about this. "We've already listened to their arguments and I voted the way I feel the people who elected me wanted me to vote, and I pland to continue to vote that way." Steger said. Steger, a member of the board's finance committee, said he felt intimidated by the pickets and admitted they may affect his business, "but that's the purpose of the whole thing," he said. He said he wouldn't vote to give the deputies the raise unless all other employes of the county received similar boosts.

Steger said he offered the picketing deputies coffee, "because it's cold out there in that snow," but they refused it. James Dawson, secretary of the threeweek-old deputies' union, said the deputies would icket in shifts, with all county deputies participating in the picket. He said he will solicit help from people not on the 27-man force to aid the deputies on the picket line i in marching and carrying pickets. HAROLD Benedict, a spokesman for the union and a member of the American Federation of State. County and Municipal Employes.

"Striking is a very distinct possibility." Benedict said Wednesday, he passed out picket signs protesting the county board's refusal to give the deputies the pay boost. Tazewell County Sheriff James Donahue said Tuesday the sheriff's department would continue to provide police protection for county residents, despite the actions taken by the deputies' union. Earlier this week a bargaining com-' et in an attempt to ward off threats of pickets, but an agreement satisfactory to the deputies was not reached.
