Robinson a retired dentist died Sunday at the Vitas i 1 Henry Fried renowned watchmaker dies at 89 Hospice in Tamarac Fla He was 80 Dr Robinson was born April 20 1915 to Morris and Frieda Solomon Robinson in the Bronx where he attended school: He later graduated from the New York University School of Dentistry and began practicing in the Bronx He was a US Army veteran of World War II who served in Europe from 1942 to 1946 The following year he settled with his family in New Rochelle He later opened a practice and also volunteered his time supervising dental interns at New Rochelle HospitalMedical Center He married Lillian Roselinsky on June 21 1942 in the Bronx A golfer he belonged to the Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison in New Rochelle He lived in New Rochelle for 30 years until he' moved to Florida He was known to his friends and family as Sy In addition to his wife of Lauderhill Fla he is survived by one daughter Frances Lefll of New Rochelle one son Michael Robinson of Bethesda Md and two grandchildren Two sisters JJenny Zimmerman and Mary Brand wein and a brother JefTe (Robinson died earlier The Riverside Chapel in Mount Vernon jis handling the Memorial Hospital in Stuart Fla Mrs Oristano a former Mamaroneck resident was 79 She was born Oct 13 1916 in New York City to Herbert and Hannah Maass Her father a prominent New York lawyer who helped persuade Albert Einstein to leave Germany and come to the United States was one of the founders of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University A 1937 graduate of Smith College she served as manpower director for the New York office of the Selective Service System during World War IL Her administrative experience -during the war led to her appointment to the staff of Dr Julian Huxley the British biologist who served as the first secretary-general of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization Serving as Huxley's general aide Mrs Oristano organized first international conference in Mexico City in 1947 and later served as director of the Paris office WESam McGuire: retired NYNEX employee making at the George Westing-house Vocational Trade School in New York City A lack of books on the subject prompted him in 1946 to write Repair Manual" the first of 14 books When Pulsar came out with its ground-breaking light-emitting diode digital watch In the 1970s Fried saw opportunity while others fretted over the end of mechanical watches lot of watchmakers left the he said in a interview in Modern Jeweler which had presented him with its life-' time achievement award thought their life was ended But I said with Fried received numerous awards from horological associations on both sides of the Atlantic In 1990 he became the first American to receive a Silver medal from the British Horological Institute He served as a consultant to watch companies such as Seiko Timex Longines Bulova and Citizen but also consulted for other businesses He gave expert testimony in cases involving watch manufacturers' product claims In an antitrust lawsuit before the Supreme Court in the 1950s he testified that US watchmakers were solely to blame for falling behind Swiss watchmakers who were beginning to dominate the market The lawsuit brought by the US government was later settled by consent decree Remarking on the state of his profession last year he reflected on JS1 of mechanical wpfenes and said the fature -tie only on repairing very high grade very artistic timepieces both mechanical and Fried moved to Larchmont from Queens in 1990 and attended services at Larchmont Temple Always athletic and despite a muscle disease that forced him to walk with a cane 10 years ago he continued to take two-mile walks until his death He is survived by his wife the former Tina Gorman of Mamaroneck whom he married in New York on April 16 1931 a daughter Caryl Fried Feldmann of Mamaroneck a sister Ettie Rit-terman of Wesley Fla- a broth- er Max of lead i European tour of horologies! seums at the end of April His career spanned an era that saw the slow decline of the US 1 watch industry and the transition from mechanical to electronic watches In 1950 when Fried was president of the New York Horological Society there were 50000 watchmakers a number that dwindled to 15000 by the 1990s But rather than bemoan the death of an industry Fried al-'ways looked on the emerging technologies as opportunities and encouraged his fellow watchmak- ers to do likewise A third-generation watchmak-1 er he was born Jan 8 1907 in Brooklyn to Samuel and Rae Wachtel Fried Polish-born immigrants He and six other siblings lived in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn where his father ran his own watch-repair shop After his deatl) from typhus in 1920 Fried went to work for a watchmaker in lower Manhattan attending school and later college at night He tended New York and Columl universities and later graduated from the State University at Oswego Fried would become famous in the lower Manhattan watchmak- ing district on Maiden Lane for his technical prowess and his exacting memory If he came across a watch he had never seen before he would take it apart no matter its defect to study its -I mechanism "I just love Fried said in an interview last year after the American Watchmakers Institute honored him with a clock tower outside its headquarters outside Cincinnati He had served the brganixation as president just have such an affection and deep interest for it what keeps me Fried taught students and fel- low watchmakers alike From 1938 to 1972 he taught watch- alition She received the Presidential Award from the ciation's District No 14 Her longtime friend Gertrude Torres cared for her during her illness She is survival by a
