0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 00000 0 GATORS WIN BATTLE OF TALLAHASSEE THE BRADENTON HERALD SPORTS SECTION Sunday, Sept. 29, 1968 1-D SPORTS FOCUS BY KENT CHETLAIN: Editor Gators Out-Defensed Seminoles; Tannen Stars Stymieing Sellers You saw it. The 11th meeting of Florida and Florida State was a battle of defenses. The hero of the game didn't score a single point. The only difference was Florida's superior running and the fantastic pass defensive job Steve Tannen did on FSU's All-American end Ron Sellers.

"Steve Olson Tannen, 20 years old, 6-foot-2, a 194-pound junior from Miami an exceptional athlete with speed (9.7 in 100) and ability to be an outstanding defensive back As freshman hurdler, he ran nation's second fastest time in high hurdles Played for Coach Gene Jupin at Miami Southwest." That is the book on Tannen, "'The Terrible," as FSU fans are saying. He didn't score a point, but he broke up two Florida State TD passes. Put Larry Smith on Florida State and the Seminoles would have won and scored at least three touchdowns. FSU was stopped that many times within the Florida five, twice on the Gator one. If anything though, the game glaringly revealed FSU's inept running against the stout Florida defense and at the same time Florida's inability to mount a passing attack against the equally rugged FSU defenders.

Graves Learned Lesson Of 1967 Defeat Florida State's devastating and highly touted Gary Pajcicto-Ron Sellers combination failed to get off the ground. Papa Gator Ray Graves obviously learned the lesson of 1967 when Kim Hammond-to-Sellers beat Florida at Florida Field. Graves keyed the Florida defense to stopping Sellers and cornerback Tannen did the job. FSU was unable to come up with an alternate receiver for Sellers, and like Florida yanking Larry Rentz when the TANNEN SELLERS HUTCHES FORE Gators were unable to move the ball, the Seminoles pulled Pajcic and inserted Bill Cappleman, who worked the ball down to the Gator one late in the fourth period only to have his running backs fail in the clutch. Florida's quarterback problem remains.

Graves called on Jackie Eckdahl sooner yesterday than he did the week before against Air Force. However, the junior signal caller, once hailed: as another Steve Spurrier, continued to show his propensity for wanting to run with the ball more than throw it. Larry Rentz, who was thrown for a loss early in the game, had a real workout punting the ball yesterday. But, as someone remarked the other day, "Florida hasn't had a good quarterback since Spurrier." The question now remains can the Gators, predicted by many to go 10-0 this season, continue to win without a star passing quarterback? Also, can FSU expect to have another banner season without some outstanding runner, or runners? They surely miss Mankins and Moreman at FSU. Next week, its the Gators in their home opener at Florida Field in Gainesville against winless Mississippi State.

Florida State entertains Texas in Tallahassee. Let Anglers Fish At Public Beach Pier Was closing the Manatee Beach pier at Holmes Beach to fishermen necessary? There has been a lot of pros and cons on the subject. Admittedly, discarded fish and bait is a lure to all types of fish, but the shark threat has been present ever since the pier was constructed five or six years ago. Not one bather has been attacked by a shark at the beach in recent memory. The action in closing the pier to fishermen was precipitated when a lifeguard stuck his hand in the mouth of a baby shark that was caught while trying to cut out its jaws.

The lifeguard suffered the agonizing discovery that the shark was not dead, as it clamped down on his hand, cutting it up badly. On orders from County Commission Chairman Bob Hutches, via Park, Landscape and Recreation Director John Marble, the pier has been closed to fishing. Capt. Clyde Fore, Herald outdoor editor and an acknowledged shark expert, says the sharks around the pier have been baby ones and have not molested bathers, or anglers. However, Capt.

Fore feels that fishermen should be prohibited from fishing for sharks. It's Fore's opinion that the pier ought to be open to fishermen otherwise. We agree. Yesterday, there were no sharks present, and the only evidence of any unusual activity was the reassuring sight of the friendly porpoises rolling lazy up and down. Perhaps the answer is in luring porpoises to the beach thus warding off any potential shark attack.

(AP) Everything worked for Florida's Gators Saturday and the nation's fifth-ranked football team wound up with a 2-0 record and a victory at the expense of archival Florida State.

Gator Coach Ray Graves gave his defensive unit full credit for stopping a Seminole offense which "has few peers in collegiate football." And, Graves added, it stopped FSU's All American flanker Ron Sellers. "We wanted to keep the ball on the ground on offense to keep it away from Sellers," Graves said after the 9-3 victory. "On defense we wanted to mix coverages and not double Sellers all day, thereby weakening ourselves in other areas. Buckeyes Beat SMU, 35-14 By HAL PARIS COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Sophomore Rex Kern fired two touchdown passes and scored another Saturday, leading Ohio State to a 35-14 football victory over Southern Methodist despite a record-shattering pass performance by Mustang quarterback Chuck Hixson. A crowd of 73,855 watched SMU stage an aerial circus never before seen in the history of Ohio Stadium. Hixon, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from San Antonio, completed 37 of 69 passes for 417 yards.

The attempts, completions and yardage represented SMU records. Ohio defenders intercepted five passes, stopping Mustang drives on the Ohio State nine, 15, 18, two a and 10-yard lines. Kern, from Lancaster, Ohio, climaxed an 80-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. He also teamed with Dave Brungard on R. With the Irish leading early in the second quarter 7-3 on sophomore Dennis Allan's blast from the six, Purdue made it 23-7 on three touchdowns within minutes.

Dillingham snapped up three passes for 34 yards and Keyes grabbed one for 11 as Purdue went 74 yards in 10 plays. Keyes scored on a 16-yard dart. A minute later Bob Yunaska stole Terry Hanratty's aerial after Dilly McCoy had deflected it and the Boilermakers' thrust 30 yards in three plays. Keyes polished it off with a 17-yard TD toss to Dillingham. Before the Irish could recoup, Bill Yanchar pounced on a Bob Gladiex fumble and Purdue proI duced a score in two plays--a 25-yard pass from Mike Phipps to Dillingham and then a 16- yard payoff fling to him.

Three seconds before the half ended Notre Dame tallied on a 72-yard drive behind Hanratty's passes to Jim Seymour, Gladiex and rookie Tom Eaton. Eaton ended it by taking a 14-yard scoring pitch from Hanratty. Two sustained drives failed for Notre Dame and a scoreless third period. In the first minute of the final quarter Purdue wound up a 63-yard drive with Keyes' 17- yard scoring burst. And later, John O'Reilly filched a Hanratty pass and Perry Williams ev-; entually drilled the last 19 yards to put Purdue on top 37-14.

In the wild final minutes Notre Dame recovered a fumble on the Purdue 26 and Hanratty eventually hurled an eight-yard touchdown pass to Allan. (AP) Quarterback Terry McMillan ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third as Missouri ran away from Illinois to post a 44-0 football victory Saturday.

The victory evened Missouri's record at 1-1 and continued coach Dan Devine's domination over Big Ten conference teams. Since 1958, Devine's Big Eight teams are 7-1-1 against the Big Ten. After a near defensive standoff 7-0 at halftime, the Tigers reeled off three touchdowns in the third quarter and two touchdowns and a safety in the fourth. SMU, trailing 14-0 early in the second quarter, scored when Hixson hit end Ken Fleming with an eight-yard pass. Fleming caught a six-yard pass for the Mustang's other touchdown with 21 seconds remaining in third period to cut the Buckeye margin to 26-14.

But Ohio added two points in the fourth when Hixson was tackled in the end zone and Kern closed out the scoring with his 20-yard pass to Brungard. SMU's outstanding split end, Jerry Levias, caught 15 passes for 160 yards, establishing another Mustang record for passes received. sMU 0 7 7 0-14 Ohio St. 14 12 0 935 OSU-Kern 3 run (Merryman kick) -Otis 9 run (Merryman kick) 8 pass from Hixson (Lesser kick) OSU- 41 run (kick failed) OSU- 41 (kick failed) OSU-Brungard 18 pass from Kern (kick failed) SMU-Fleming 6 pass from Hixyon (Lesser kick) -Safety Hixson tackled in end zone OSU-Brungard 20 pass from Kern (Merryman kick) Miami Edges Georgia Tech ATLANTA, Ga. (AP) A fired-up Florida defense held Florida State's offensive machine to one field goal Saturday as the fifth- ranked Gators ground out a 9-3 victory in a bruising cross-state football battle. Florida fullback Larry Smith tallied Florida's only touchdown in the second quarter after a short kick and a five-yard penalty gave Florida the ball on the FSU 23.

Florida's other poin.s came on a 30-yard field goal by George Youngblood. Smith, gaining 20 of the 23 yards in seven smashes through the line, carried a Seminole defender across the goal as he scored from three yards out. Florida's Jack Youngblood added the game's only other score on a 30-yard field goal after penalties and the stubborn Gator defense had backed the Seminoles deep into their own territory in the second quarter. Florida was unable to move the ball after a kick from the end zone gave them the ball on the Florida State 35 and a penalty moved it down to the 20. Youngblood took over from there, easily scoring the first three points of the game. Penalties played a big part in the traditional rivalry as the teams fought for field position throughout the game with neither side able to put together a long drive. Florida alternated quarterbacks Larry Rentz and Jack Eckdahl but the running of Smith and halfback Tom Christian provided most of the offense for the Gators.

Florida State's -America flanker, Ron Seller, snagged several short passes, but time after time long throws that could have broken the game open went out of his reach. Sellers caught six passes for 50 yards. Gary Pajcic, who tried to get the FSU offense going for the first three quarters, hit on 13 of 27 passes for 109 yards. Bill Cappleman, who took over for FSU in the fourth quarter, completed 3 of 9 aerials for 18 yards, giving FSU only 127 yards in the -far below the yardage expected from the Seminoles. Florida gained only 33 yards through the air, but had 129 yards rushing compared to 63 for Florida State.

Although Florida was rated No. 5 in the nation, Florida State had been considered a onepoint favorite on the strength of its explosive offense smothered by Florida defenders.
