there were relatively few places for a woman in a business world controlled by men But especially within the past decade or so you hear more and more frequently about women who are breaking into the REP TOM GALLEN a different view i Pratt Tells Bond Bill 'Reasons1 REP JEROME PRATT lays Job on the line Pratt Bill Would Tax Phosphate the new constitution was adopted that the time required to be spent as the elected representative of my area would be greatly he stated Pratt explained further that under the new constitution a legislator's duties are expanded to at least six interim committee meetings per month plus a 60-day regular session and special sessions I do not believe in subterfuge in what we are under the guise of expense money rather believe that the public is entitled to know Lovejoy said "If I ever discover that tax money is being used illegally on some individual enterprise I will be the first to object" The engineer also noted that where and when such skullduggery is differences of political opinion between Manatee two state representatives Jerome Pratt and Tom Gallen came to light this weekend as Pratt made clear his position on the controversial legislative pay raise Pratt even went so far as to lay his future political life on the line after he had explained in detail why he supported the pay increase and would do so if he had to He took issue though indirectly with intentions of introducing a bill to slice the increase saying he would not or co-sponsor any type Pratt said position on the pay raise recently passed by the Florida legislature is 1 Jerome Pratt has explained that his amendment to the revenue bond bill is a type of safeguard to protect the taxpayers of Manatee and Hardee counties and keep them informed The amendment issue is another area where Pratt and Rep Tom Gallen find themselves somewhat at odds since Gallen has stated he would rather see the entire bill fail than pass with the More Florida History In State Schools Urged business world and doing it successfully Just for example last week a young mother Mrs William (Bunny) Rhodes was named assistant transportation director and route coordinator for the Manatee County school system The appointment marks several Mrs Rhodes has become the youngest school transportation executive in Florida and the only woman in the state to be assistant transportation director It was only two years ago that she joined the school transportation department serving as a school bus driver and assistant route coordinator Then about a week ago John Van Ley resigned after 10 years with the department and Transportation Director Matzke recommended Mrs Rhodes for the position So beginning last Monday Mrs Rhodes moved to a new desk and waded into all the problems that must be solved by an assistant transportation director She explained that her new job requires a considerable amount of map making along with personnel coordination and public relations Mrs Rhodes also works with driver assignments and payrolls She uses a specially-equipped car supplied by the county to check mileage and map school bus routes "One she remarked "of having a woman in this position is that tax law loophole he says Pratt explained that his bill would allow tax assessors to assess mineral rights separately from the surface land He said the bill is aimed at phosphate companies with large land holdings on which there are valuable sub-surface minerals the companies lease out these lands for agricultural purposes they come under the Green Belt or agricultural assessment and their tax payments are less than they should Pritt stated He said he Introduced his bill order that phosphate companies would pay their fair share of taxes all over the state and in Manatee County in Pratt Unheralded and unsung a movement has been afoot for some time-originating in area historical societies to have Florida history taught in Florida schools on a more regular basis than is presently being done Even as the current Legislature mulls over other problems it is possible that the solution to the problem may lie with the Manatee County legislative delegation Sen Wilbur Boyd is now the chairman of the Senate Edueutipq Committee and State Reps Jerome Pratt and Thomas Gallen are well known for their interest in problems of this type However it is understood the delegation has not statement and instructed Mrs Roy A Patten recording secretary and herself a retired teacher of many experience to write the State Superintendent The reply from John Ritter program director is ambiguous in some respects and leaves a number of questions unanswered Ritter wrote: amount and quality of instruction in Florida history varies widely throughout the state Much depends on the local emphasis and upon the quality and been approached directly on the subject as yet despite the fact that a try through Superintendent of Instruction Floyd Christian has thus far been unproductive The effort apparently originated last fall with the Peace River Valley Historical Society A statement was drawn up signed by the Society secretary Col Read Harding indicating that the teaching of Florida history in the public school systems of the state was regarded as inadequate It also noted that the Superintendent of Public Instruction and members of the Florida Legislature had been apprised of the position The statement went on to say that a continuous year of Florida history as a major Pratt said that under the present Mil the city or eooaty governments without informing the public beforehand
