yesterday that 50 other city facilities would be examined for asbestos hazard as well The officials meeting first at New York City Hall and later with members of the Board of Education -sought to reassure parents that the city's latest environmental crisis was under control They said school had been ordered to close ofTany areas of school buildings that were likely to be sources of airborne asbestos fibers and five asbestos abatement contractors were working around the clock to identify such sites After a 2'i-hour closed-door meeting' Board of Education President Carol Grosser issued a statement saying the problem areas had been sealed off and alternative spaces set aside for summer programs She said test results would be available two to three days after' air samples are taken "Where abatement work is required the premises will be dosed until the work is completed and appropriate tests demonstrate that the areas are safe for she said Asbestos once commonly installed in buildings for fire protection has been shown to cause cancer when fibers are inhaled and by law it must be removed or sealed off in any renovation or demolition project Deputy Mayor Norman Steiiel predicted that most of the summer programs wduld operate on schedule today even if it required moving some classes to alternative sites until asbestos' problems are corrected.
