Caulfield Jr. of San Rafael has been elected physician- in-chief of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco by his fellow doctors at the facility. Caulfield, 38, has been with the Permanente Medical Group since 1968. New Trial Ordered In "73 Case I-J Special Report SAN FRANCISCO The Stte Court of Appeals has ordered a new trial in the case of a Richmond ex-convict found guilty of a San Rafael purse snatch.

The court held Monday that Mann Superior Court Judge Charles Read Best should have granted Nelson Claude Thomas, 28, a new trial following the disclosure that four jurors who were going to try his case had read a newspaper article about the matter. After the jury was selcted in December 1973, but before testimony began, a story appeared describing the commencement of the trial and how a codefendant. Larry Dobie Young, had pleaded guilty. Four of the 12 jurors read the article, but after questioning them, Judge Best allowed the trial to continue, and Thomas was convicted of grand theft. The crime involved the knocking down of an 87-year-old San Rafael woman and the stealing of her purse in September 1973.

Although Judge Best stayed a prison term for Thomas on condition he spend one year in Marin County Jail, the California Adult Authority revoked his parole and returned him to the prison system. He now is doing time at the California medical facility at Vacaville. Thomas spent three years in prison between 1970 and 1973 on a fraud conviction. Cher Is Sued By Her Father LOS ANGELES John Sarkisian, father of singer Cher Bono, sued his daughter for 84 million Monday, demanding she stop telling people he is a criminal. Sarkisian brought suit in superior court against Cher, Time and People magazines for remarks attributed to her in magazine articles in which she described her father as compulsive gambler and heroin Sarkisian, long separated from Cher's mother, conceded he had been arrested for narcotics and bad check offenses years ago, but he said these are now and stale private Although his daughter was quoted as saying, he's doing, probably he said he had in fact lived exemplary, virtuous and honorable liJfe for the past nine years." Sarkisian asked for $4 million and a court order requiring Cher to stop talking about him.

Fire Safety Inspection Set The Marinwood Fire Department will begin a fire safety inspection of homes along Qui- etwood Drive early next month, with further plans to cover the entire Marinwood area, according to Chief Gaylord E. Bonfield. Firemen will check safety of wiring, storage of inflammable material, heaters, put stickers on windows of homes with children or invalids and chart such homes on their maps, Bonfield said.
