Ground Breaking Tomorow For Mill Valley Methodists Sanctuary Verde Congregation Gets Reprieve High spot in the 58-year history of the Mill Valley Methodist Church will come tomorrow noon, with groundbreaking rites for the new, 358-seat sanctuary at Camino Alto and Sycamore Avenue. The new sanctuary will seat the congregation on three sides of the communion table, with the choir behind the fourth side, according to the minister, Rev. G. Russell Oaks. Architects for the structure are Shig Iyama and Bob Tanaka of Berkeley, contractor is Ed Burgar of San Rafael.

The church first was organized in 1907, with the Outdoor Art Club as its meeting place. The congregation soon acquired property at Sycamore and Blithedale avenues, and erected a tent on the grounds. The congregation also often met at the Odd Fellows Hall during those early years, but in 1913 the original building was erected on the church property. An addition was made in 1940, but by 1954, the congregation had found a newer, larger present one. Since much of their new property was tidelands, several years were spent in bringing it up to grade.

The Fellowship Hall, Sunday school and office buildings were the first erected on the new site, six years ago. Three years ago, the nursery school was built in cooperation with the Tamalpais Nursery School, which presently uses the building five days a week. Women's Leader Due In Larkspur Dorothy C. Wagner, secretary for relations of the commission on ecumenical mission and relations of the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., will make two speaking appearances Tuesday for women of the Redwood Presbyterian Church in Larkspur. Her first appearance will be at the monthly luncheon, which this month will be held in the Marin Lutheran Church at 649 Meadowsweet NEW LUTHERAN EDIFICE sketch shows octagonal sanctuary and Sunday school and offices for All Saints Lutheran Church, which soon will be built in San Marin.

The special service will be held in the Marin Jewish Community Center, San Rafael. Inverness Church Seats New Officers St. Episcopal Church in Inverness has been pledged more than $6,000 for 1965 operating costs, as compared with $3,600 last year, according to Vicar Francis W. Read. He termed the report, given at the annual meeting, especially encouraging in light of the parish's separation from Bolinas.

Other business at the annual meeting included election of John S. Mason as warden, as Fate of the Loma Verde Community Church is far from settled, but it will not be closed for some time, members of the Baptist congregation learned at a special meeting Sunday afternoon. of the questions have not been answered, yet there is dedicated determination to seek the right the minister, Rev. Gilbert H. Hall summed it up.

The meeting was called because the church is not yet self- supporting, and may not become so unless the limited population it serves contributes an amount of energy and financial support, far above the national average. Alternatives posed by Lr. Lawrence Janssen of the American Baptist Convention strategy and planning headquarters, were to either revamp the church as a branch ministry of a larger, well established church, immediately add to Sunday school facilities which presently are overcrowded, or relocate the church to serve more centrally the entire Novato, Rafael Village as well as Ignacio and Loma Verde areas. Dr. Theron Duerfeldt, director of extension and strategy for American Baptist Churches of Northern California, said closing the church will not be considered until all other possibilities have been exhausted.

Some 70 congregation members attended the emergency session; another planning meeting will be called within a month, Rev. Hall announced. Following gathering, those attending dined on ham and turkey in buffet dinner hosted by Mrs. Isaac Campbell. Bids for construction of the octagonal, ultramodern sanctuary capable of seating 225 congregation members and of classrooms and offices designed for 150 pupils are expected to be called within two weeks, according to the future newly- arrived minister, Rev. Arthur W. Sorensen. Plans have already been completed for what eventually will be a $175,000 project, by Warren Gilbert and Associates, San Jose architectural firm.

The new church is being built as a mission activity of the American Lutheran Church. Rev. Sorensen explained. Unlike some churches in which a congregation first organizes, and then erects a sanctuary, the Lutheran minister will be recruiting hjs congregation while the church walls are rising. The first organizational meeting and worship service will be held March 14 at 10 a.m.

He comes to Novato from eight years as minister of Mount Tabor Lutheran Church in Salt Lake City, Utah. Rev. Sorensen said that the new All Saints church probably will have a in the sanctuary, such as he found very successful in Salt Lake City.
