By DON FORSYTHE While most of the rebuilding talk has emphasized replacing eight defensive starters, it is the No. 1 offense which will have the bulk of the new faces when Nebraska opens its 1970 football season against Wake Forest Saturday. Seven newcomers are ticketed for debuts as starters in the 1:30 p.m.

contest which will attract a sellout crowd of approximately 67,000. Four of the newcomers will start on offense and three on defense, as the Comhuskers make their debut on the new Astro turf surface at Memorial Stadium. This circumstance leads to two assumptions: (1) The defense may not be as porous as the loss of eight starters would indicate, and (2) the offense probably as finely tuned as the attacking unit which closed the 1969 season with 44 and 45 point explosions. The most heralded newcomer is sophomore halfback Johnny Rodgers, who takes over the job held by Larry Frost in 1969. Rodgers averaged 9.7 yards each time he handled the ball for the freshman team and handle it in a variety of ways Saturday returning kickoffs and punts, catching passes and simply running with it.

Redshirt sophomores Jerry List and Doug Dumler will open at tight end and center, respectively, and junior college transfer Keith Wortman is expected to get the starting nod at left guard. Defensively, rookie Rich Glover is ticketed to start at left tackle with redshirts Johnny Pitts and Bob Terrio set to open at right end and weakside linebacker, respectively. The other 15 starting jobs have been claimed by veterans, eight of whom were regulars a year ago. Aside from the new faces, little will be different as the Comhuskers are employing the same basic offense and defense as they did in a 9-2 season last year. One area which has changed noticeably in the pre-season drills, however, is the quarterback was a fine problem at one says coach Bob Devaney, now a sticky Last year the question was going to start, Brownson or Now healthy enough to start, Brownson or The junior veterans shared the quarterbacking chores with the No.

Van continues to improve dress him for the game he added. Waiting in the wings should the veterans be limited is sophomore Bob Jones, who claimed the No. 3 signal calling spot with a good spring performance.

The Comhuskers rank as a solid favorite over the visiting Deacons in the first football meeting between the two schools. Wake Forest coach Cal Stoll, who like Devaney served as an assistant at Michigan State before moving into a head coaching job, figures his club is better than a year ago when it finished 3-7. The Deacons have a veteran defensive club and prospects of an improved offense with either veteran Larry Russell or rookie Jim McMahen at quarterback. Persistence by Banks, Pappas Keeps Cubs in Hot NL Battle To End? By Associated Press Ernie Banks and Milt Pappas might not have said it but the pair of veteran Chicago Cubs are perfect examples of the familiar saying: If at first you succeed, try, try again. Banks, thwarted twice attempting to sacrifice bunt, swung away and crashed a three-run homer that snapped a 2-2 tie and sent the Cubs flying to a 9-3 triumph over Montreal Wednesday. While Pappas, acquired late in June from Atlanta, after failing to win with the Braves and the Cincinnati Reds before that, hurled six innings as he won his 10th game as a Cub. The victory kept Chicago just one game off the pace of the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets, co-leaders in the torrid National League East battle.

The Pirates blanked St. Louis 2-0 on Luke two-hitter while the Mets had to go 14 innings before subduing the stubborn Philadelphia PMlhes 3-2 on Cleon run-scoring triple. In other games, San Francisco trounced Houston 11-0, Cincinnati battered Los Angeles 13-4 and San Diego edged Atlanta 3-2. In the American League, LINCOLN, FRIDAY, SEPT. 11, PAGE Baltimore edged New York 2-1, Cleveland trounced Washington 134, Kansas City took a doubleheader from Milwaukee 2-0, 10-2, Boston belted Detroit 14-0 and Minnesota swept a twin bill from Oakland, 6-1, 7-2.

The 39-year-old Banks also delivered a run-scoring single in the seventh inning and received a standing ovation when he left for a pinch hitter. wish this was the first day of spring training and we were starting the season all said Banks, who has only seen limited action in 63 games because of ailing knees. It was 12th homer this season and No. 509 lifetime, placing the Chicago first baseman- only two homers behind Mel 511 and the eighth spot on the all-time list. Pappas, 12-7 and 10-5 as a Cub, requested the start with only two days rest.

He yielded four hits and left for a pinch hitter with a 7-3 lead. volunteered to start because the chips are down now. 1 get tired, but 1 was struggling and it was right to leave when I said the 31-year-old right-hander. Pappas had nine successful seasons with Baltimore in the American League, winning 110 and losing 74 games before he was traded to the Reds in December of 1965 for Frank Robinson. In seasons with Cincinnati Pappas had a 30-29 mark before the Braves purchased him midway in 1968.

With Atlanta he was 18-20 when Chicago got him on June 26. Walker, 12-6, struck out nine and only walked one as the left-hander helped snap the Pirates losing streak at three games, one-out shot off the right-center field wall, scored Tommie Agee who had walked, sending the sizzling Mets to their sixth triumph in seven games. Right-hander Gaylord Perry tossed a four-hitter for his 20ih victory and Willie Mays slammed a two-run homer, his 27th, as the Giants routed Houston. Perry, 20-13, joined his brother Jim Perry of the Minnesota Twins in becoming the first brothers in major league history to capture 20 games in the same season. The righty is 22-11.

Lee May poled a grand slam home run and Johnny Bench cracked his 44th homer and two singles for four more RBI to pace the assault at Los Angeles. The victory gave the Reds a 14-game bulge over the second-place Dodgers in the West and reduced their title- clinching magic number to five. The Padres spotted Atlanta a 2-0 lead on Oscar first major league homer, then rallied for three runs in the ffifth, the last two on a double by A1 Ferrara, to snap hander Dave personal losing streak at 10 games. Defending Tri-State Conference champion Yankton (8-1) will try to halt Doane 37-game unbeaten string in the featured weekend game as the state colleges open play Saturday. Yankton, under new coach Bill Bobzin, is led by standout sophomore quarterback Doug Cummings and strong running backs Les Goodman, Wendell Wilson and Willie Kloewer.

The trips into the dressing room for pre-game and halftime talks and the post-game trek will be the real struggles. NWU coach Harold Chaffee, starting his second season as head coach Saturday against Dana, has four sets of brothers among his 55 squadmen and six are starters. Chaffee brought Wesleyan in at 54 in 1969 with mostly sophomores and juniors. These upper classmen have now been bolstered by a superb freshmen crop including of those brothers to give expectations of a return to power by the yellow and brown. The Plainsmen will be competing for the first time in the new Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Ck)nference with Dana, Doane, Midland, Hastings and Concordia. In some circles they are picked to win the title.

The club gets two conference opponents to begin a lO-game schedule and Chaffee feels the Vikings are stronger than some think. only had six seniors and always come down here with their guns cocked for us. always big and can wear you says Chaffee of Grant team.
