Prison TV Drama Is Tribute To Dead Man By JOHN F. KEARNEY Presented last night over television station KQED, written, directed, performed and filmed entirely by inmates of San Quentin Prison, evolved into something more than just another story about penal life. It was a memorial to Cary Johannesson, 27, editor of the prison newspaper, a man whose own private cage slammed shut Aug. 28 when he hanged himself in his cell. Shortly before his death he had talked with Richard Queirolo of Mill Valley, a commercial television cameraman, and had baen pleased when an idea he had for a film about prison life was accepted.

On Aug. 27, Johannesson spent a long time talking over the project with Rick Cluchey. author of a stage play already produced by the San Quentin Drama Workshop. Cluchey approached by Queirolo some days later, decided he would write a play in Johannesson's memory. decided to capsule into half an hour, the life of this man who was at San Quentin eight years to the day when he decided to end it Cluchey said afterward in a television interview.

the play bears the same title as my stage production, its only similarity is that it is about men in Four men are together in a cell. Communication has gone beyond the bounds of ordinary human comprehension, into the world of fantasy where the thin line beyond reason and sanity is vague and out of focus. reason for writing this television play is to show that when you keep men out of the world of freedom and cut them off, something happens inside. They lose a little something every said Cluchey, who was in San Quentin 11 years before being released on parole seven weeks ago. Technically, the production is good considering the crew ran into sound difficulties.

The fact it was made at all is in itself unique. Cluchey said he believed it i was the first time in penal history that a play about prison life had been made in a prison by prisoners and put over a television station. It was created by the combined efforts of the prison's drama workshop and the new film group. Queirolo said it was hoped future projects of the film workshop would include making training and initiation films.
