On Television Julia Adds Zest To White House By Barbara Delatiner Well National Educational Television tor Julia Child out of her kitchen last night and plunked her light smack in the middle of the White House Not just the hite House kitchen mind you but the whole mansion The occasion was a state dinner for Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Sato The wys to take the public via television and back fn tin-fust time to see what goes into all the pomp and circumstance surrounding House Red treatment of foreign dignitaries It's always great fun to embark upon a culinary adventure with our very own 'Trench And while she may have been a bit out of her depth here her gee whiz approach proved a trifle disconcerting in interviews that attempted to probe the diplomatic significance of the November visit her unabashed naivete more than made up for her repertorial shortcomings I mean when Julia tells us was so wt better believe it or despite her notoriety Mrs Child remains the lady next door Seeing things through her eyes is sort oi like seeing them ourselves As Julia led us through the complicated steps that resulted in what riie assured us was of the best dinners I've eaten anywhere there were touches that bore the inimitable Child stamp lake Julia literally drooling over the first course I have a little she asked after discreetly scratching her head just smells so Or Julia discovering that 300 dish towels were to be used to dry the wtiHe-and-gold chma and stemware that would be washed bv hand Or yes indeed Julia holding up the reception line to talk a blue streak the conversation was not recorded mto President ear Of course the 50-minute documentary the latest Festival on Ch 13 would have been interesting even without Mrs Child presence re a curious people and one of the miscellaneous morsels of information that we tend to hold dear to our hearts is undoubtedly a detailed account of how onr fust family entertains 190 celebrities From flower arrangements for table centerpieces to three days of cooking by a properly temperamental chef he howled while dishing out the entre get me sick to clock-watching service the affair was a marvel of precision and even more horrendous The latest virus to attack off-Broadvvay is called and it opened at the Actors Playhome last night hereafter to be enshrined in my memory as the date on which I saw a play even more obscene and duller despite its obscenity than a horror that briefly infected the plavgoing community earlier this season Logically enough one of the producers of was also a producer of His name is James Walsh and I have had it tattooed on me so as to be fully prepared for his next production This latest sample of Mr Walsh's tastelessnes has been written by Murray Mednick and Tony Barsha The latter has put himself into double jeopardy by also directing In fairness I must admit that his direction is slightly better than his writing of the play about and 1 assume for drug addicts At least he manages to get two good performances out of a gentleman called Walter Hadlcr who doubles in brass and almost succeeds making two Jong and senseless monologues sound entertaining Tony Serchio as the Hawk and a pair of his female dope addict victims Sommer Sallv and Barbara Eda-Young are also superior to their materia which is meant as a compliment even if it add up to one According to the program the group that performs this sick saga called itself Keystone Workshop in Improvisation led by Tony and rented a farm where this play was made It seems a pity that all those boss and girls including two musicians who look like myopic Indians could not have been milkmg the moo-cows and feeding the chickens instead of piling up the manure During the intermission I heard a lady ask her escort if he thought the play had been improvised I resisted the temptation to inform her that nobody could possibly improvise that badly Index Eridge 20A Eusiness 13A-17A Classified 2KB-46B Crossword 20A
