WEDNESDAY EVENING, "7 MAICH 27, 1807, DEWOT till IS OPTIMISTIC 8 HANGMAN'S NOOSE BETTER THAN LIFE IMPRISONMENT Erland H. Soderberg Is Ready to Go to Gallows Charged With Murdering His Mother. AT SUM'S FUTURE To Be Given FREE To The School Children of America Services Are to Be Held Each' Day Program for Easter Sunday. Railway President Declares There Is Much to Be Thankful For. NEW YORK, March 27.

Frank Trumbull, president of the Colorado Southern system, has just returned from Chicago in an optimistic frame of mind over the continued prosperity of the West. He said; Stolid, sullen and with a heart as dead as a piece of -wood, Erland H. Soderberg, murderer of tola own mother, rests In a solitary cell in the city prison, hoping fcis miserable- life wili be spared and stating: that he prefers the hangman's noose in preference to life imprisonment. Never in the history of local criminology has such a human being as Soderberg toen arrested on a charge of murder. -V-lce would be warm as compared to the blood that flows in his veins.

He sleeps well, peacefully as a child. There are visions of tha ghost of his mother, with a gaping wound in her throat and a sanguinary gash in the abdomen, that confront him. His sleep is undisturbed and his waking moments arc devoid or any paroxysms of grief which would ordinarily convulse a child that had slain a mother. would prick him with a pin It is probable that he would not bleed. As a study in degeneracy and abysmal ignorance and brutality, thia son who slew5 his mother stands almost without parallel la the' annals of American crime.

HODGKINS SAYS. Detective Hodgklns says: "Last night as he told the coroner's jury of his fiendish act there was scarcely a perceptible tremor on his face. It was a matter of fact recital. He was sorry that he killed his mother --imply because he would be hung for it. There was no remorse, on his mother's account.

He is certainly a remarkable criminal. In securing the confession from him he was cool as an iceberg. He is an unnatural being. He views his own death, at the end of a hangman's noose, very much in the Fame light that he regarded the death of his mother. tu "There are no symptoms of a downgrade movement, except such as will naturally follow the curtailment of improvement by railroads, and if this does not extend too far it may prove salutary in the matter of adjusting labor conditions, money rates, etc.

"If we look at our situation in an unruffled way we can count up a number of blessings. For example, no rate wars, no rebates, no retaliatory railroad construction, no apprehension of paralysis over thousands of miles of territory by strikes of railroad eniDloves because the railroad This sketch was made by Leonard C.
