On Television 'UNCLE Girl Is Weak Sister By Barbara Delatiner Newsday Television Critic When you think about it got to applaud public service attitude After all some people are out Friday nights and depriving them completely of "The Man From has been unsporting So now st have "The Girl From for middle of-tfie-weekers And you know what? Maybe NBC should have just rerun the boys The distaff version is pale by comparison Not tbat anything particularly wrong with "Tlie Stefanie Powers She looks great in a sweater either right side np or upside down as she spent a few minutes during last premiere dangling precariously over a tank of man-eating piranhas And she also knows how to take care of herself None of that fancy karate stuff for her mote feminine She wields a mean bottle and a nice body too dimbing and jumping with the ease of a Russian gymnast Her colleague Noel Harrison is not a girl the slightly long-haired son of Rex who mav took like his Either but acts like David McCalluin A happy lighthearted spy is Noel but dedicated when Hie chips are down Real tough when not out ogling girls including Then wrong with the show? Nothing really that a litHe-more tongue-in-cheek cure From adventure which pitted "Die Citf and her boy against a THRUSH agent who had perfected a gas that cut human activity in half a viewer got the distinct impression that the UNCLE folks were taking them stiver too seriously That could kOl the endearing qualities the sense of extravagant nonsense that makes the original such fun Maybe this kind of spying just for the fairer sex a limit to how much derring-ao a girl can do Miss Powers for all of her sweater appeal is a trifle limited VIEW FROM THE WINGS Chita Rivara gats a coupla of backstaga pointars racantly I from Edward Earle left and Christopher Ha watt starring in the Minaola Theater's cur-1 rent production of "The Roar of the Greasepaint The Smell of the Crowd" Miss i Rivora will star in the production to follow "the Threepenny Opera" which begins Tuesday and will be directed by Hewett On Music Telemann Festival Is On If Anyone Really Cares Occasional Wife9 If a viewer know better TV being a family entertainment medium and all Hut suspect that NBC was dramatizing an offcolor story in "Occasional its new situation comedy which debuted last night Such going on! Like a mother asking her unmarried son "Darling 1 hate to get personal but are you are you Whereupon the hurt bachelor picks up his mother's pocketbook and leaves Sure he came back for the briefcase he meant to take all the time but the writers unwilling to let what looked like a good joke to them pass carried it a bit further Says mamma upon reaming that sonny had married "Is she a What with exploring the nonmarital bliss of a couple posing as newlyweds so the man can succeed in business the situation is just pregnant with slightly risque possibilities The comedy alas if Hie opener is any indication of things to come is as harshly distasteful as the premise Despite the presence of two attractive young performers Michael Callan and Patricu Hatty as the bogus husband and wife and despite some lively stop-camera direction gimmicks employed by Ernest Dntoff "Occasional promise to be one of the least palatable of a singularly unappetizing roster of comedies that have hit the mull screen so for this year CBS News last night added to its store of living history with "Young Mr a charming trip through a nostalgia-laden past with the former President Who needs a Telemann Festival? Not many New Yorkers apparently judging by the size of the audience at the first of a series prophetically entitled "A Tiny Telemann which opened last night at Carnegie Hall Inspired by last Vivaldi Festival and no doubt encouraged by the phenomenal success of the Philharmonic's Stravinsky Festival and Lincoln Mozart Festival this summer David Blum music director of the Esterhazy Orchestra came to the conclusion that the time had come on the eve of the 17th-Century German composer's 200th anniversary to do something good about old Ceorg Philipp Telemann It was a nice thought only a lot of people including Yours Truly really care less get me wrong was a famous figure in his own day But historically and musicologically he is i nonentity He was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and as a matter of fact he turned down a church job in Leipzig which Bach eventually But the relationship between the two ends right there and creatively no comparison whatever can be made Telemann was a prodigiously energetic worker And he was a composer of tremendous facility who could write music as they say in his sleep The quality of most of his more than 1000 compositions ranging from opera and church works to chamber music suggests that he actually may have done so Like many overly facile technicians Telemann tended to be shallow and unimaginative He was one of the counterpoint-writing organists of his period and he was content to create nothing new under the sun He was canny enough however to adopt the Italian operatic style of melody popular at the time and this reduced even more the depth of his more seriously-intended scores Yet it must be said that he was sufficiently expert and plausible to make concoctions which play well and are quite easy on the ear though the listener will be hard-put to remember a single phrase There were some good examples of this at last concert The program included a suite for two flutes and strings a "Water suite a concerto for three violins and strings and a concerto for three trumpets two oboes and timpani Everything sounded nice and professional and completely devoid of meaning Be it said that the performances by the Easter-hazy Orchestra the various soloists and conductor Blum were equally nice and professional a very good chamber ensemble and Blum is a tidy conductor If you want to investigate what we have been talking about here there will be two more concerts in the series Friday and Saturday nights Eyes Li Theater Unit Adds 2 Groups Associated Community Theaters of Suffolk (ACTS) has added two community theater groups to its roster the Sayville Musical Workshop and the Festival Singers of Smithtown "The Sound of will be the Sayville fall production while the Festival singers will present Gilbert and as their premiere production Dec 2 and 3 Other shows opening the I9664S7 season for ACTS members are: "Dark of the by the Act One Work- gatnjannnaiwnwainiiiaiiinii ii'anwniiiiiiiiiiiiii ama mm iimmm Index News Calendar 11A Radio Listings 5A Sports 14A-20A Stock Market 13A TV Listings 5A Your Problem 12A Wilson 7A shop of Smithtown Oct 28-29 Nov 4-5 "The Music by the Carnage House Flayers of Se-tauket Nov 11-12 18-19 "How to Succeed in by the Curtain Timers of Kings Park Oct 28-29 Nov 4-5 "Stalag by the Davidson Flayers of Smithtown Dec 2-3 9-10 "You Take It With by Hie Flaycraften of Bellport Oct 28-29 "12 Angry by Hie Masque Theater of Smithtown Oct 7-8 14-15 "Banana by the Mohawk Players of Babylon (dates unannounced) by Theater 5 of Huntington Nov 4-5 11-12 "Mary by the Township Heater Guild of Huntington (dates unannounced) All ACTS member groups are seeking performers and technical help for Hie 1966-67 season For fur- ther information call Ellie Mahoney at AT 6-8753 or Lillian Caran at AN 5-3326i LOTS OF WAITING "Walt Unfit Dark" fha suspense thrillar by Frederick Knott has its 250th parformanco tonight Loo Romiclc right who atars in the play ia ahown 7 in a acano with Julia Horrod Tha play ia now running In London and Maxico and duo to epon next month In Faria 2 A Newsday.
