A LETTER. Written From Munich By Miss Edna The Straight -r Hanna. Munich, July 30, 1910. Dear Folks: As I said in my last letter this is the Passion Play letter. I left Munich about 10:30 a.

m. I never got into a much bigger crowd at a station and there were so many Americans I felt as tho' I was back fT in. S. A. There were; two trains leaving Munich at the, same time" so we had plenty of room on the; train.

There were only two (iermahs in the car with me, everyone "else, were; Americans. The trip of. about two 'Ahxxn in food YmU and a half hours was certainly a beautiful one, the road winding all the way higher into the mountains going part of the way, near Munich, along the shore of one of the famous Bavarian lakes, "Sternbergersee." As we drew near Oberammergau ft commenced to drizzle so we landed in frain-coats and umbrellas. The little village can be seen for some time Head tho Babel Day no fxr; pozudcr czZooo Gko Grccsn cf Tarter czzarcxZco to coam as it is in the valley surrounded by mountains and the road-bed has to wind down somewhat to the level of the valley the little village church and the theatre building, and the mount with the golden cross were of course the first landmarks, to be seen. When the train pulled in, the first thing that I heard was the bawl of a young calf pastured near the little depot and of course it gave me a rustic welcome.

A number of the peasant men were acting as baggage men and I wish I could have a pic ture of the man who carried my suitcase he Was dressed, as all of them. In bijsiress the easiest wayj for us if we were thinking of the present alone would be to sell clothes that pay us swollen profits, explain away faults, employ salesmen skilled in selling you, not what you want, but what we want you, to buy. But that idea doesn't prevail here because our success comes from sale after sale, from holding old customers as well as making new ones and because we are here to stay. If service and quality, right values and true economy is your idea, you'll find this store a good place to buy. That idea is woven, sewed and shaped into every style of clothes from TheHouse of Kuppenheimer and the Celebrated Kaufman Shrunk Garments which we are showing.

The barn and residence were under the same roof and when I came home at night the tinkle of cow bells greeted me.

I asked the woman how many were there and she said four and a calf was born during the night, which made five in our house. My room was far away, that is as far as it could be, from the barn and everything was as clean as a pin. The floors were nearly worn out with scrubbing, and were so white I was almost afraid to step on them. Immediately after dinner, which I ate Copyright 1910 TheHouK of Kuppenheimer Chicago at the other house, that of Sebastian Lang, I met Hazel Barnwell and together we tramped around Oberammergau visiting the little church which, tho small is very beautiful inside and very rich decoration, the grave yard where were many interest ing memorials for different prominent men in the past history of Oberam The Boston GloHMinig Hoiuse J. It was so cold be cause of the altitude and the drizzling rain that we had to hunt the shelter of a coffee room once in awhile to get warm. After supper I went di rectly to the house where I roomed and spent the evening chatting with the peasant woman over the kitchen fire. She told me many interesting things about the play and the village people and all the time. I was getting model lesson in housekeeping, ev erything was so spick and span.

I asked her to wake me next morning a curtain which closed between the scenes and tableaus the sides of the stage remain the same always representing the house of Pilate on one side and of Caiaphas on the other and the two entrances separating these from the main and center of the stage are representative of streets. Going, back to the acts of the Passion jPlay, the scene in which Christ separates from his mother and friends in Bethany was very effective, also the last supper and the foot washing after it, during the latter no was spoken and time to go to mass for the people tle. I was just a many people are used in the play, and there are only 1600 inhabitants in Oberammergau. Many of the costumes are made by the Oberammergau women, the orchestra, the chorus, the leader, the stage director all belong to Oberammergau, in fact the only outside element is the scenery and a. few costumes. The costumes are beautiful and they have two sets, the better to be worn on clear days, the second set on rainy days, for much of the stage is not roofed and has for its back-ground the mountains which rise just back of the stage. The scenery that is changed is that of the center of the stage in which the various scenes are given, which are not street scenes or before ittle too late to see them, but heard their voices as they sang along the way to the church accompanied by the ringing of the bells it sounded beautiful in the fresh clear morning air, for the day had already dawned the action was beautiful.

JEWELER. Clay Center, Kan. pilate, for instance the upper room, where the last supper was held, the it seemed like a beautiful picture, for you know many -of the scenes are arranged from famous pictures of the life of Christ. The scenes before the high council, the cleansing of the temple, the bartering with Judas and the betrayal were all excellent, also the condemnation scene and the journey to Golgotha. The scenes that pleased me least were the scenes in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Res previous day.

I went immediately after breakfast to meet Hazel and her friends, and the man who played Judas Johannes Zwink accompanied us to the building, and helped us find the right entrance. We were stopped by people who snapped his picture on our way to the theatre. He cannot talk English but I Garden of Gethsemane, Golgotha, the Sepulchre, etc. You can imagine what a variety of scenery they have when you know they have twenty four tableaus and without counting I talked German to him both at this urrection and the Ascension these can think of at least twelve scenes in the Passion Play itself and each of these scenes are different. The time and on the day before when he wrote his signature on his picture for me he was so interesting and so charges for lodging are very high, but when one stops to think that the seemed at times sacrilegious, especially the first named.

The last two are of course very dramatic and would require more of the theatrical contrivances and of course that is out of harmony with the idea of the Oberammergau. The play is very much and sometimes very harshly criticized and I was somewhat sceptical about it when play is given only once in ten years and that except for the revenue then received there is practically no other pleasant in his conversation. His daughter plays the part of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The audience room was crowded, it holds four thousand seats and many people had standing room. The point as to is wonderful to think of it being giv en by the people of Oberammergau, its being sacrilegious has more ple, not including the man who gives the prologue each time. I never have seen more beautiful prices at Miss Sadie Price's millinery store. French plaid silk, Persian chiffon, black embroidered chiffon, honored for it. The praise and good in the play certainly out-weighs any blame in my estimation. As much as I should like to have my friends in America see the play I hope no one will ever have enough of disregard for the fitness of things and enough of the spirit of commercialism to tear it away from the home in the mountains, where it has been given every ten years since 1633. spirit of Oberammergau is half of the charm of the Passion Play.
